WILMINGTON, N.C. - An Air Force veteran who served in Kuwait found a note on her car Friday criticizing her for parking in a veterans-only parking spot in Wilmington.
Mary Claire Caine told WECT-TV that she returned to her car from shopping at Harris Teeter to find a note plastered to her front window from a person identifying themselves as a "Wounded Vet."
It read, "Maybe [you] can't read the sign you parked in front of ... This space is reserved for those who fought for America ... not you. Thanks, Wounded Vet."
Caine, who served in Kuwait and on the flight line of the F-117 Nighthawk, said her heart sank.

In a world in which someone is constantly telling me that I am some kind of "..ist", this really IS sexist.
Here on the left coast I'd go all wobbly at the sight of a veterans only parking space. Even if badly worded, somebody tried to say thanks.
A bunch of veterans [especially Vietnam] don't advertise; that some oaf would simply assume that a female could not merit the status is a slam on a whole lot of nurses, clerks, and tehnicians I remember coming under fire in '68 and like it or not, women are put at even greater risk in today's military.

The story plainly say VETERANS, no mention of Wound Vets Only.

And how on earth could she be shamed. She did nothing wrong. Throw the stupid note in the trash and move on.
I see these “expecting mother” reserved parking spaces at the grocery storeand it pisses me off... You chose to have a kid, lady. Go park the Lincoln Navigator somewhere else.
the article doesn’t give the impression you have to be a wounded vet, that it was a spot for any veteran to use.
Yep - sometimes folks make mistakes (Just ask Moochelle - she was mistaken for - GASP - the help!).
Perhaps this woman should supplement her bumper stickers to include one giving other people a clue as to her military service.
Unless of course what she is really after is the attention...
soon blacks will have special parkin b/c they’re “owed” that. asians will then get special parking spots b/c of their driving.
white guys will have to park where the shuttlebus picks them up and have to prove they haven’t oppressed anyone b/f going into the store.
On that point I agree. I served Cold War. I would leave the spot open for wounded combat vets. I could use the walk anyway.
That's how I'd take it too. Businesses reserve parking places for "Employee of the Month", and all sorts of other reasons; If I were in a position to offer such, my sign would read: "Thank you, vets, this spot is reserved for YOU."
That said, my Mom has a handicap card (hangs off the front mirror post), and she tells me to use it even when I drop her off at the front door of some business, etc., and then go to park. I park elsewhere, unless we'll be both walking back to the car. The exercise is good for me. :-)
I disagree. I've been out of service for 25 years. Never had a sticker on my car denoting branch of service.
We had a Pathmark (now closed) with signs for shoppers with children; I parked in them without hesitation regardless of whether my children were with me or not. Don’t need another protected class, and there is no law against parking there. I’ve been there with my children, and wouldn’t dream of searching out a spot like that.
I like the comedian who pointed out the absurdity of having morbidly obese people park in handicapped spots; we aren’t doing them any favors, but enabling them.
Same here. I've recently had people thank me for my service because they assumed just by my wearing an old field jacket or surplus digital camo shirt. After 25 years out it catches me off guard. In a way uncomfortable. I didn't serve for accolades. I wouldn't park there. I served out of a sense of duty and privilege like you.

The first time I saw such a sign was in a Harris Teeter parking lot in North Carolina.
My reaction was 180 from yours.
I was seriously impressed that an upscale private business extended such a generous courtesy to their pregnant female customers.
Since I was not pregnant at the time, I didn't park there, but as brilliant marketing ploy, it was outstanding, and absolutely 100% effective! Every woman who has ever been heavily pregnant would look at that sign and grin!
I see they are smart enough to have expanded on what worked, and they added a space for Veterans.
Again, brilliant! Most people would see that sign as a public gesture of corporate support for all veterans.
Heck, I might have parked there myself, since I am a USAF veteran, and would have just quietly enjoyed the unexpected gesture.
But I'm a mature grown up.
I know physically handicapped people who at first glance don't appear to be missing a leg, so I'm not the type who would leave a nasty note on some stranger's car, or challenge them for their right to park in designated slots.
Okay, so far four people don’t have one or have hardly seen any ... go to a gun show sometime and view the parking lot.
