NFL finds Patriots used underinflated footballs
Boston Globe ^ | 1-21-15 | Ben Volin

Posted on 01/21/2015 6:57:45 AM PST by Colehill1999

The Patriots used underinflated footballs on Sunday night.

The next question is how did it happen?

According to a National Football League letter about the investigation into the controversy that was shared with the Globe, the Patriots were informed that the league’s initial findings indicated that the game balls did not meet specifications. The league inspected each of the Patriots’ 12 game balls twice at halftime, using different pressure gauges, and found footballs that were not properly inflated.

According to ESPN, 11 of the 12 game balls were found to be underinflated by about 2 pounds each. The NFL specifications say they must be inflated to 12½ to 13½ pounds.

:: I think the Pats are going to mop the floor with the Seahawks ::

Likely but, keep an eye on that spread. The power loss in 2013 keeps coming back to me.

Belichick is like a spitball pitcher. If he were in baseball you could probably shake vaseline, a nail file, and some sandpaper out of his hoody.

Aren't professional, highly competitive athletes ALWAYS looking for some kind of an edge on their opponent? Most take it right to the limit, but some go past that point.

It didn't seem to affect the balls used by the Colts...

Indeed.

In the wet conditions, the properly inflated Colts footballs slipped out of Luck's hands, but the Pats footballs never out of Brady's.

Didn’t Sean Peyton get a year suspension for their bounty program?

this sentence says it all- The Patriots led, 17-7, at intermission, and outscored the Colts, 28-0, after the officials seemingly corrected the ball issue.

Ah, the plot thickens. This means that the Patriots suckered the Colts into believing they could make it close, went back to the normal game ball, then blew their socks off, deflating their egos more than thought humanly possible.........

More diabolical than previously considered...... The psychological mastermind cheats of all time!!!!

Yes. I agree completely. In my past, I've also heard cheating be referred to as "getting the competitive edge" so it doesn't sound quite as dirty.

Allowing for the detail that the balls would be somewhat warmer than 75 degrees F if they were pumped up, since a hand pump makes the air warmer as it compresses, I come out in the vicinity of 2 psi. Of course, it depends on indoor and outdoor temperatures too, air lost as the needle is removed, and variations among pressure gauges.

“Remember last time there was a big cheating scandal the Pats rattled off 17 straight wins. They kind of like being stigmatized.”

The bottom line is that the pats have not won a super bowl since cheatergate, which tells me that they could not figure out ways to cheat because they were under the watchful eye of nfl security. They now thought that the ‘heat’ was off and could start cheating again.

Plus a one year suspension for Sean Payton. Pats are repeat offenders, suspend Belichek for a year.

Seriously? Go out to your garage and squeeze one of the tires on your car. Can you tell is it under or over-inflated by +/- 2 PSI? Even the difference of 2 PSI on your tires would not be noticeable as it sits, compressed, on the ground.

Are you suggesting that the NFL referees get their grip calibrated and certified prior to every game?

Tempest in a teapot. Belichek cheats. We get that. Move on ‘cuz that is what the NFL will do.

The Patriots and their Super Bowl wins should be treated the same way we think of Bonds, McGuire, and Clemons.

An asterisk should be beside all of their wins.

I made the same mistake on another thread.

Need to use absolute pressures, not gage pressures.

I also looked at the assumption of constant V. If the volume of the football changes by 5% or less, then cooling accounts for all the loss. If the volume changes by 10%, then the cooler weather doesn’t account for much of the deflation at all.

If Obama were the GM of an NFL team, it would be the Cheatriots.

At those temperatures and pressures, air behaves as an ideal gas. Assuming no change in volume, the most useful equation is the Gay-Lussac Law (P1T1=P2T2). A change of 2 psi cannot be explained by the temperatures that day.

Remember the ear-biting boxer (his name escapes me) and the semi-final of his Olympic round? He was clobbering some guy from New Zealand when the ref told him to stop. He either didn't hear of didn't heed, but he lost his spot in the final and the medal as well.

The guy from New Zealand advance to the final where, of course, he got clobbered again.

This would be appropriate response here, despite the screaming which would result. Fines mean squat compared to the value of a Stupor Bowl appearance.

That’s the one thing which would end cheating in the NFL.

“The next question is how did it happen?”

The balls were checked by officials just prior to the game. The deflating had to take place on the sidelines during the game. Can you say, ‘ball boys’? ;-)

The Pats apparently didn’t like the pressure so they resorted to their air game
