We have a store called Batteries Plus....maybe I can take the APC there and have a new, really new, battery put in it and see what happens.

The ‘problem’ with replacing the battery:
APC charges almost the price of a new battery backup. APC and the seller will try to convince you to purchase a new battery and give to you a ‘credit’ toward the purchase of the new unit for giving to them the old unit.
They, in turn, put a new battery in the old unit and sell it again.
