At the time I was a bit put off by AFA writing up that episode as pro-gay. OK, it DID put it “out in the open”, but at the same time the guys were desperately trying to show and prove they were not gay. Anyone really pro-gay would not try so hard.
Seinfeld was vastly better than Friends. #1, in fact.
I always read that as obvious sarcasm.
He was parodying the fact that everyone was so afraid of offending gays, anytime they would mention them, they had to append a statement like that anticipating the accusations of bigotry. Which of course, made that statement meaningless, since it was only being done to avoid confrontation.
