Blizzard expected to bring New York to a standstill, subway to shutdown

Snow and powerful winds swept into the Northeast on Monday as a storm predicted to grow into a major blizzard prompted mass transit shutdowns, highway closures, thousands of airline flight cancellations and a ban on driving in New York City and on major roads across the region.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the closure of New York City’s subway and bus system as of 11 p.m. Monday, the first such closure since Superstorm Sandy hit the region in the fall of 2012.

With the closure of all mass transit, and the citywide driving ban as of 11 p.m., Cuomo’s declaration meant the nation’s largest city would be brought to a complete standstill except for people willing to venture out into the blowing snow.

Cuomo’s announcement came amid concerns that winds associated with the storm would gust as high as 70 mph.

Weather bell’s Joe Bastardi from Saturday’s video, just hours before this storm came into full vision:

“The rest of this winter will probably be a winter that you will remember for the rest of your life”.

Exactly. And if there is so much uncertainty about the weather in a 100 square mile area over the next 48 hours, how the heck can anyone “know” what the global weather will be in 100 years?

"They declare a State of Emergency in Oklahoma, across the state for 10-15 inches ... so I don’t begrudge them in New York for doing so with up to 36 inches coming ... :-) ..."

In Seattle, 2-5 inches creates chaos. Schools often shut down for as little as 1-2 inches. People who come here from the Midwest just laugh.

Well, we have an ice storm here in NE Illinois. 1/4” ice all over the cars, making scraping the windshields a pain in the a$$. Slippery. Bad stuff.

Yeah, I would rather drive in 6-12 inches of snow than 1/4-1/2 inch of ice. There are way too many wrecks on the ice!

Weather prediction, for all the computer models and what not, is still basically a guess.

And the latest prediction has reduced the snowfall totals from three to two feet. The communist mayor of New York City was clearly crestfallen since his dire predictions aren't coming true. His plans to destroy what remains of liberty in NYC are falling apart. There's no doubt that Bill de Blasio had plans to impose martial law to control the sheeple.

In either the 100-square-miles or the next 100 years ... it’s all down to patterns and trends. What you say is if this pattern and trend keeps up ... “this is what will happen”. The “problem” is that you don’t necessarily know if the pattern or trend will stay constant. That’s always been the problem with predictions.

If it’s like it has been in Oklahoma ... they ARE getting the three feet of snow ... it’s just in a slightly different area ... :-) ...

That happens around here too ... we hear that we’re getting a foot of snow where I’m at ... but ... we end up getting six inches. The “foot of snow” went about fifty miles further over ... LOL ...

I saw bits of the broadcast on CNN and De Blasio seemed very comfortable ordering martial law like conditions. On CNN, they have used the whole newshour to talk about nothing but the oncoming “monster storm,” which is in the headline, but on the bottom of the screen they have a crawler with the current conditions in different cities, which were described as “overcast with light snow flurries.”

The only thing that broke the hysteria was the news of the drone found on the White House lawn. Wolf “blizzard” Blitzer seemed to having a hard time interviewing reporters on the scene, when the scene was a magical winter wonderland with little traffic and people going about their business biking and walking with umbrellas that stayed untwisted.

Well, heavy snow and wind and cold will be dangerous for some (unprepared).

My favorite will always be the “tropical storm” they had that one year up there where Shep was “leaning into the wind” while young folks were playing in the rain behind him and then a guy road by on a bicycle ;^)

One way or another, it's a HUGH AND SERIES FAIL for De Blasio, the commie mayor. If this turns into an historic snow event for the ages, his utter incompetency will be shown. If it turns out to just be another routine snowfall, his chicken little approach will bring much mockery. He's truly an evil man who hates America.

Well then, that does it! Martial law must be declared immediately if not sooner! :)

If anyone in that area is not taking this seriously ... They’re gonna wish it was just the sky falling! They’ll end up being buried, after being quick-frozen ... :-) ...

Kids used to pray for snow so they could earn money shovelling sidewalks and driveways.

The more the better!

To be honest though - they are saying it may hit Boston the worst - I lived there for a winter when our (USN) ship was in the South Boston Shipyard and it snowed a foot or so 3 times that winter. Those folks in Boston DO know how to handle snow...every Irish guy and his brother has a pickup truck with a plow on the front and they make short work of snow.
