Putin Builds Naval and Army Base on Wrangell Island – Owned By the US
Gateway Pundit ^ | 01/27/15 | Jim Hoft

In May 1881 US explorers approached Jeannette Island, Wrangell Island and Henrietta Island in the Arctic Ocean and claimed them for the United States.

Wrangell and its 200 mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) has billions of barrels of oil/gas reserves and hundreds of millions of pounds of fisheries. It also has a strategic military location for tracking Russian moves in Arctic.

Now, Vladimir Putin has begun construction of a naval base and army base on Wrangell without so much as a peep from the State Department or President Obama. Something is tragically wrong here.

The State Department has undertaken the giveaway with Putin in the guise of a maritime boundary agreement between Alaska and Siberia. But as an executive agreement, it could be reversed with the stroke of a pen by President Obama or Secretary Kerry.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, Congress was not notified, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. The Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition, and so has California’s legislature.

President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry could stop the giveaway with the stroke of a pen. But they won’t.

OK, your map only has the one L one. Where’s the double L one, that seems to be in question?

“Thanks for the lesson, now on which is the Ruski base being built on?”

From the article...

“In May 1881 US explorers approached Jeannette Island, Wrangell Island and Henrietta Island in the Arctic Ocean and claimed them for the United States.”

This is only true if the author meant Wrangel (one L) Island.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to care.

The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangell, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta. Wrangell became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S. Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.

From the article: ...Jeannette Island, Wrangell Island and Henrietta Island in the Arctic Ocean...

The Wrangell Island you indicate isn't anywhere near the Arctic Ocean.

Obviously the “island” is the one L one just off the coast north of Siberia.

Common sense says that should be Russian.

Yes. World Net Daily ran the same story about Bush.

It’s been a Russian national park for decades.

This is just kook conspiracy stuff.

There is no story here. A quick internet search shows that Wrangel (it has been referred to as Wrangell in the past, not to be confused with the Wrangell in the Alaskan panhandle) has been controlled by Russia since the early part of the last century. There were American claims to it in the 1800s, but it’s not much more than an ice-locked pile of dirt.

There have been Russian military installations there in the past, including a radar station (may still be there - not clear). It has been a Russian nature preserve since 1976.

Looks like it’s maybe less than 100 miles from the Russian coast and at least 400 miles from the nearest point in Alaska.

Obama is spineless, but this isn’t part of that. I’m much more concerned with what the Russians are going to do in the “New” Cuba.

I believe you are correct. We saw a TV show about an Alaska bush airline. On one episode a couple of pilots were flying some supplies out to a remote area and at one point they said oh make sure we are not crossing the 5 mile line into Russian airspace and Wrangell Island. But I don’t know how it was spelled.
