A similar strategy worked for Nixon back in 1968. Nixon was moving under the radar for a couple of years, meeting with county chairman groups in various states, shifting the strategy so there would be less dependence on the regions and localities that traditionally voted for the Democrat candidate for President, and collected a large number of donors and allegiances among the influential but largely invisible patrons with the deep pockets.

Then suddenly, when everybody thought Richard Nixon was gone for good, SURPRISE! He’s BAAAACK!

George W. acted similarly.

He shunned the spotlight until the last possible moment. Meanwhile, his opponents overexposed themselves.
