I can’t imagine the terror that must have been running through the mind of the 74-year-old Southgate, Michigan homeowner just before 5:00 AM this morning as a home invader broke in.

The homeowner armed himself and stepped outside the bedroom to protect his cancer-stricken wife as she called 911.

The homeowner ran into the armed home invader. According to investigators, the home invader raised his weapon, and the homeowner was forced to fire to save his life.

“It is possible that the elderly couple had known the kid his entire life”.

True but sounds like the homeowner probably saw the gun he raised first. I feel sorry for this man and his wife. They are battling her cancer together and now have to deal with this stress.

Around here, the drugies hang out in parking lots of oncology offices and follow patients home knowing that they are prescribed “the good stuff”.....and cancer patients are good at fighting back UNLESS THEY HAVE A GUN.

The punk had a gun when he broke into the home.

How are his parents going to explain this while crying into a television news camera that their baby would never hurt anybody. Bragging that he was a gang member speaks volumes about this puke, whether true or not.

I only stated a fact that the kid lived right next door.

He thought they were easy prey, they're old, defenseless, that he could steal all the pain meds his heart desired.

The sad part for the homeowner is that he and his wife probably knew this punk as a young boy, seeing him everyday etc....It would be hard to live with regardless if this "kid" had a weapon on him or not.

He made claims of being a gang member but I'm guessing it was just talk.

A Justin Beiber wannabe, maybe. A gang member, no.

I am just about to head out to help my elderly father in law pick out a nice 9 mm for this purpose.

Good for you! Train him up good. A Ruger LC-9 is a good choice. Dependable and quite light. If he has good hand and arm strength, a larger platform like the Beretta FS-92 is an excellent pistol.

NEVER talk to the police until you have competent legal representation

The only acceptable communication with a responding officer is, "I thought he was gonna kill me. I'm having trouble breathing...I need to go to the hospital."

Accompanied, of course, by the appropriate level of shakes and gasping.

He was apparently looking for drugs. I’m sure he thought he’d avail himself of the lady’s pain meds. 19 years old. The drug problem does not just effect the individual. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the leading cause of robbery to support an ever increasing habit and homicide in this county. The poor man has to live with knowing he killed his young neighbor - I’m not suggesting he didn’t do the right thing because he absolutely did, but still, this would have to haunt him because he is the type of person who has a conscience and has demonstrated it by defending his home and family. It’s what separates civilized man from the common thug who would feel no remorse having taken a life.

I learned long ago that if *ever* visiting an elderly person, call first, and if they are somewhat dotty, loudly call their name and identify yourself repeatedly. And always be ready to duck until you both have facial recognition.

I agree. Ideally, the perps parents will reach out to both apologize for their son and to forgive the neighbor for killing him.

You don’t want a bad police department to be able to assert you were impaired when you made the decision to shoot. Lawyer up.

Thankfully, the police chief has already stated in the media that the man had every right to defend his property. The report I saw on yesterday’s news claimed the man was at the police station but wasn’t expected to be charged.

The 1500 block of Flanders street doesn’t look too bad but Southgate isn’t exactly in the hood.

The report I saw on yesterday’s news claimed the man was at the police station but wasn’t expected to be charged.

And that's the way it should be...in every state of the Union. Period. As long as the perforations are in the front of the body, it's all done.

My father volunteers with the home hospice group. They deliver all of the large equipment and the hospital bed to the home late at night, so the idiot kids seeking pain medication don’t see them
