At some undefined point in our history, Americans evolved from being freeborn citizens of a locally governed sovereign state that was in union with other sovereign states, to being

"Consumers of government services, somehow
convinced that the services promised to them
by the Federal Government
are at someone else's expense"

So what has also evolved is exactly the government a large proportion of the population wants. They express this choice by voting in exactly the government they deserve. Members of Congress are happy to comply.

As Barry and Reggie wing over our humbly bowed heads in AF1, it's something to think about.

RE:

I am against a balanced budget amendment
because I fear it would just turn into an excuse to raise taxes.

President for 16 years?
Shirley, you jest.

Regarding the size of the House of Representatives...
(Does the house have too much power or too little power?)
(What is the proper balance?)
Should the size of the house be fixed at xx times the number of the senate?
Originally,
representatives were about 2 1/2 times in number as senators (65 vs 26)...
...now, it is 4 1/2 times in number (435 vs 100).
...now, to keep the original 2 1/2 to 1 ratio,
it would translate to 250 representatives.

Or should the size of the house be fixed by population size
(example: 1 rep per xxx # of citizens)?
Originally, representatives were 1 per 30,000 in population
...now, that would translate to 10,000 members in the house of representatives.

The idea for federal judges is not bad.

There should be NO federal retirement plan for elected officials.

Flat income tax vs. national sales tax?
we could go on about that for hours...

Our immigration problems can be solved without all that falderal.

Nothing but love, my brother.

Agree, yet despite gridlock, it isn't as if “law” in the form of unconstitutional executive diktats and scotus orders don't flow like a river.

That is neither parliamentary nor republican, it is despotic.

He also said the constitution cannot be changed. Well, we either reframe our government once again to serve a free people, or get used to becoming the very slaves our founding generation fought to avoid.

That point occurred on April 8th, 1913 with ratification of the 17th Amendment.

Overnight, our federal republic became a democratic republic without removing the federal features from the constitution. It set up internal contradictions that must be removed if freedom is to survive.

Our framers knew that democratic republics had poor track records. They dissolve into warring factions, anarchy and end up in tyranny when a strongman promises to restore order.

The wonder isn’t that we have a tyrant president. The wonder is that it took a hundred years for an Obama to emerge.
