Glam rock was a huge and influential musical movement in the UK in the early to mid 70’s, never really caught on in the US, except for a few ‘cult’ (to the US) artists.
It ranged from basic footstomping bands like The Sweet through bands like Slade and T Rex (who basically invented it) to more serious glam rock like Roxy Music and of course David Bowie.

He was very big in the UK in the 70’s, only had a couple of US hits, ironically the tunes are used in your sports arenas and are probably better known than the artist.
Townsend accessed a child porn website, but never downloaded anything or paid to join (confirmed by police). He also informed his manager what he was doing. He was/is a survivor of sexual abuse, and has said that he opnely wanted to see what child porn there was on the net, in order to expose it. He passed on the site to police and anti-child porn crusaders.
Its a weird one.
1997 sounds about right from what I recall. Hardly heard his music on the radio thereafter.
He wasn’t really glam rock to me....
Glam rock is a newer term originated by Creem magazine and picked up by modern queer journalists
It doesn’t fit
David Bowie .....especially Ziggy Stardust or Diamond Dogs era
Mott the Hoople
Iggy Pop....
T Rex. Marc Bolan credited as Genesis of glam but he credited Richard Wayne Penniman
Lou Reed Transformer Rock and Roll animal era
The Sweet
Roxy Music
Edgar Winter They Only Come Out At Night. Glam cover
New York Dolls........the archetype for sure
Slade
Tubes
Mud
Alice
I find it an odd label
Like a validation homo critics like
Interesting list of guilty insurgents...
I’m guessing Beck called it with his early departure from Stewart.
It refers to the garish, glamourous clothes the artists wore. Although some glam legends like Slade tended more to top hats, spaceage costumes and less girly clothes.
As a Brit, and 70s child, I love glam rock. Had its pale imitation groups, but did manage to produce Bowie, Roxy, Slade, T Rex & Marc Bolan, as well as the Dolls and Mott the Hoople (whom I saw just last year on their one off reunion tour, they were amazing, as if 40 yrs had just disappeared). A fun genre, with great fun, irony and flamboyance and just some timeless music.
My cool friends would cringe when I popped Slade in the 8 track
I liked it
The 72-73 stuff
Ugly critters that were rousing rock
ZiggyStardust was a pivotal album of my mid teens early high school
The androgyny bounced off us but the spaciness and Hendrix or Bolan references did not. We got that
Plus Ronsons guitar work was so sharp and different
This album is best played loud....lol....paraphrasing
Every song good
Their best work was actually as, whilst still popular, they started to slip slightly in the charts, the 1974-76 period (no1’s and top 5’s become top 10 and 20’s).
Everyday and their greatest ever track How Does It Feel being the best of that time. Plus a cracking and dark pop film Slade in Flame and a couple of excellent albums.

The overalls that looked like Stewart plaid and the big sideburns and top hats
I was in 11 th grade secondary school
I had a yellow MGBGT 1968 model
I carried this cool hippie chick to school with me daily.... Long straight hair and great legs
Faded US navy low waisted bell bottoms
Tube top and tied off Oxford shirt
Dr Scholls clickety clack wood bottom sandals
An Eastover girl. Our version of St Johns Wood or Belgravia
Boy that defines early 70s where I lived..,,. American South
She would sneer at Slade and insist on Bare Trees or Future Games or Kiln House era Mac or early Steve Miller band
She was right admittedly but Slade was goofy fun
There were hard lads once I think. Post mod
They influenced a lot of folks
My first Slade Album! Mom got it for me on a trip to California!
She also brought back Jimmy Hendirx "Are you Experienced"
My Mom was awesome...
