Doctors Warn Against Revival of ‘Measles Parties’
Breitbart California ^ | February 8, 2015 | Michelle Moons

Doctors are warning parents against reviving “measles parties” intended to expose children to the disease at a gathering with at least one infected person.

The parties ostensibly help children build immunity against the disease and are used instead of vaccinating or leaving exposure up to chance. Such practices have been discouraged despite similar events such as “pox parties” which expose children to chickenpox for the purpose of building immunity.

“CDPH strongly recommends against the intentional exposure of children to measles as it unnecessarily places the exposed children at potentially grave risk and could contribute to further spread of the outbreak,” Dr. Gil Chavez of the CDPH said in a statement reported by CBS Los Angeles.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “Measles can be serious, especially for children younger than 5 years old. It can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death.”

A recent study of children’s electronic medical records in northern California revealed higher levels of under-immunization among graduate-level educated as well as low-income communities.

Thanks for the post. We came out of the North Country (Summitt, AK) and got vaccinated for whatever in Tennessee.

I couldn’t imagine being deliberately infected by a disease just to create an antibody against it.

We did all get chicken pox though.

yes, its so stupid. they have vaccinations available, with hardly any side effects, very little mercury in the solution, hardly any people complaining about their kids getting seriously sick right after the shot, a pretty good idea that maybe their wont be any damage to the immune system 20 years down the road, a good track record of getting politicians to pass laws forcing places like schools to require the shots, and, not totally outrageous profits for the insurance companies.
i trust my kids life and future with bristol squib myers.

Yep, that’s great if that’s the choice you make for yourself and your family. Some people, yes I know it’s very rare, but it still happens, have very severe side effects the first time they get the vaccine. I understand there are some blood tests that can be done to help know if someone will have an allergic reaction, but the tests don’t catch everyone. Ever hear of a doc or CDC offering that these can be done? Ever hear of a doc or CDC offering that blood titers can be drawn to see if you still have adequate immunity instead of just telling you to go ahead and get the booster? So many scream about the people who decide not to vaccinate. I never hear those same people willing to step up to the plate when people do have reactions to the vaccine. It greatly concerns me that anyone is willing to force a vaccine on someone who doesn’t want it because that person has decided that they are okay with someone else taking the risk of the vaccine causing reactions.

No, you do NOT have the right to have your children to act as vectors for diseases which CAN and DO kill other kids. A lot of kids CAN’T take vaccinations for various health reasons. And a certain, low but significant percentage remain vulnerable despite vaccinations. What keeps these kids safe is herd immunity. So if you don’t want your kids vaccinated, fine: as long as you live in a ranch 100 miles from any other human and have all your foods and supplies dropped in by airlift. But you do NOT have the right to spread deadly diseases to infect and kill innocent children.

I have to wonder if this current Mexican strain is just somehow much more virulent, causing some of the concern?

That was because people locally sought the mildest possible versions of those diseases to expose their children to, and garner future immunity, as safely and quickly as possible.
Particularly measles, for the future health of girls.

It was generally understood that exposing a pregnant woman without a measles immunity, was all but a death sentence for the health of a baby.
Nobody wanted that!

The vaccine was a natural progression for medicine, back then.
Get exposed to the lowest dose, as safely as possible, develop the immunity, and protect everyone was the goal.

BTW, chickenpox was the disease that protected people from smallpox.
That was the original, old-style “party” exposure, as I recall.
It wasn't until many years later that people knew that having chickenpox to avoid smallpox, meant that shingles was in your future....

Widely practiced in the past. Kids survive, immune for life. Not saying I completely agree. Mumps went around in my family this way when I was a kid. It didn’t harm my two older sisters, but I got it in both sides and have shot blanks as an adult

“but then again people still die of the flu and we don’t think anything about getting the flu”

Around 30000 to 35000 a year die from the flu in the USA. No big deal

And you think you have the right to tell someone that they must take the risk with the vaccine, no matter how small, because it might lessen the risk of disease to someone else? Kids can, and do, die from vaccines as well. We don’t make international visitors prove they’ve been vaccinated before they enter the country, whether they come legally or not. They still pose a risk to those few who cannot be vaccinated.

Just an fyi, the CDC reports that the MMR is effective for producing immunity in 98% of people. But, there’s been a big stink with one of the manufacturers, and I can’t remember which one right now, for fudging the effectiveness rates. A couple of the scientists that worked for the company brought to light some of the games that had to be played to get the theoretical effectiveness to where the gov’t requested it be by a certain date. So I find that interesting. I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that vaccines in general have not reduced disease rate, although anti-vaxxers love to claim that the disease rates were dropping before the vaccines were introduced. But, I do wonder what the real numbers are. It sounds like maybe they aren’t what the manufacturers claim them to be.

It isn’t chicken pox that protected people from small pox. It is cow pox.

Dumb is right.

They are scared of a vaccine but want to go and give their kids a full-on full fledged case of measles?

Dum-buh.

can’t get kickbacks from big pharma if the kids are allowed to have their bodies immune systems fight it the way it’s’supposed to be fought rather than jabbing a needle through several body defenses.

dirty little’secret is peoplemwhomare vaccinated shed the virus and can infect people with measles. it is well known n the medical community. if they do the proper testing they can tell if the virus is from a vaccine or is a “wild” virus.

I recall chicken pox parties and rubella (German measles) parties. But never, ever a measles party.

“Don’t tell me America hasn’t been “dumbed down” by our so-called “education” system. I won’t be surprised when Witch Doctors will soon be allowed to get a license to practice in this country.”

Brother, you just said a mouthful. We have many of these the Luddites right here on FR.

“Why would anyone willingly expose their children to such a terrible disease rather than getting them vaccinated?”

Stupidity and arrogance. Many of these dolts read the Internet and think Thimerosal, which contains Mercury and used to protect many medicines from diseases, is bad and causes everything from Autism to asteroids from space, and should be banned. These geniuses think they know better than everyone else and refuse to support inoculations.

As FReeper ThePatriotsFlag put it, we have dumbed down this country so bad that “I won’t be surprised when Witch Doctors will soon be allowed to get a license to practice in this country.”

You can’t use the shift key to show respect for your readers to properly form a sentence but you think we should take advice from you on medical issues like vaccinations?

I did not know the number, but we still don't think anything about getting the flu. Funny thing is that if 100 people died of measles today, the news would be talking about a pandemic.

My grandfather (born in 1904) said the flu was very deadly when he was growing up. The difference now is that if you are one of the really sick, you get medicine. But before WWII, if you got really sick you had a good chance of dying.

“Healing has been illegal since the 1930s.”

Tell us that after you have had your day in the ICU. You’re talking to someone whose entire family, wife included, are medical professionals. It is childish stupidity to claim doctors have no interest in healing and don’t heal.

I don’t know what makes people like you so stupid but it really works.

I think doctors ought to go Gault on your dumb self and refuse you any medical treatments; watch you beg for your life.
