Black Brains Matter: Why Are Graduation Rates So Low?

If education is an escalator to lift people from poverty, young African American males are languishing at the bottom level. Only about 60 percent of them will earn high school diplomas, and roughly four in 10 drop out before graduation day. That’s compared with a 65-percent graduation rate for Latino males and 80 percent for young white men.

Meanwhile, the graduation gap between young black men and their white peers has grown even wider, jumping about 10 percent in a little over a year.

Those are just some of the sobering takeaways from the 10th biannual Schott Foundation report on the state of African American males in public education. The report’s authors examined national data on high school completion rates during the 2012–2013 academic year. They found that although the overall graduation rate for black males has grown to 59 percent—up from 51 percent in the previous 2010–2011 survey—they are least likely of all demographic groups to graduate from high school in 35 of 47 states and the District of Columbia.

“Simply stated, while most will say black lives matter and are important, the four-year graduation results in this report indicate that most states and localities operate at best, and have created at worse, climates that often don’t foster healthy living and learning environments for black males,” wrote John H. Jackson, president and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education, in the report.

Pedro Noguera—a sociologist, an education analyst, and a professor at New York University—said the study wasn’t a surprise. National education leaders still haven’t addressed the “systemic” problems that lead to the stubborn achievement gap between black and white students....

The area of Africa from which most slaves were taken, today has an average IQ of 80. And don’t forget, “social promotion” helped get the high school graduation rate up to the 60% mentioned in the article.

‘...climates that often don’t foster healthy living and learning environments for black males,” wrote John H. Jackson...’

As always, abdication of any variety of personal responsibilty for minorities.

“doing well in school is derided as acting white in ghetto culture.”

Sadly, true. It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but I had a friend back then who went through heck in high school in large part because he was a black kid who got really good grades and was more interested in science than in “keeping it real.” He got called everything, from nerd to oreo to stuff I can’t print here. The girls were the worst. They said stuff that made even me blush.

Said friend is now a engineer in Texas, making a VERY nice living. I often wonder where a lot of the girls who picked on him are doing with *their* lives now. I know at least a couple of them got knocked up by 16 and dropped out.

He who laughs last, I guess...

Simply stated, look at the disintegration of the black nuclear family and not the states and localities. Then look at who the dropouts run with. There was a study I read back in college that argued peer groups were as big, if not bigger factor than the usual suspects of educational policies, class size etc. If you run with people who drop out of school and don’t value education, chances are they’re going to bring you down sooner or later.

Going to school and getting good grades is too white.”

Yes, and probably the baby mommas are saying stuff like, “You so great, Baby, you don’t need no high school. You can be anything you want; maybe a rap star.”

“These are just graduation rates. We aren’t even talking about college readiness rates,” said Noguera, who is an expert on racial disparities in public education. “What this data suggests is that putting more pressure on students [through high-stakes reforms] is not all that effective.”

Is he suggesting that we make High School Diplomas even more meaningless than they already are so that more black males can get one?

Not one word about the illegitimacy rate of back children. I would be curious to see what the graduation rate is for young black male from intact two parent families. I suspect it would be significantly higher than the 60% rate of the entire black male population.

Male children need fathers in the home.

Isn’t the average Black IQ something like 70?”

I think it is aboubt ten point lower than the average white IQ, which is about ten points lower than the average Asian IQ. But few blacks are actually all black so there is a lot of variation on those ten points.

Basically it is having a family that stays together and high expectations. The Asians have higher expectations and have less single parent homes than do whites and far less than do blacks.

Basically it gets to a combination of nature, IQ, and nurture, family.

I have always said on these threads is what young black males need is Jewish mothers.

Jewish mothers are famous for insisting on excellent performance in everything their children do.

As you said high expectations and low tolerance for laziness or slacking off is what will get a kid through high school and on through college.

"If you're gonna be a rapper, basketball player or pimp you don't need no education."

The big elephant in the room is the illegal drug industry. The drug culture is being handed down to the children by the parents. Entire families are involved in it. Kids make more money in a week than a kid can make in a month. And, it is all untaxed money. To them, education is for chumps. School is a place to grow you market.

I get your point. But this is another “system” ruined by liberals, who then blame the “system”.

"...and roughly four in 10 drop out before graduation day."

That's great news! That means only a residual 5-10% remain in school wasting our tax dollars given that they'll spend the bulk of the remainder of their lives in prison. No "degree" required there, huh?

A mind is a terrible thing to waste on a pimp/pusher/mugger/"teen."

IMHO

Oh for Pete’s sake! Give me a break!

When black students are ‘allowed’ by their fellow black peers to study and learn without being ostracized or beaten up for “acting white” then and only then will the so-called ‘problem’ with black graduation rates reverse itself.

And no I’m not adding in the parent(s) of these black children into the equation. Their kids ‘peers’ have the most influence on them in High School. So if the kids get beaten up and worse by the ones who say they are “acting white” their parents will not be able to change that other than by leaving the environment and the school system that allows that to occur.

My own solution is harsh, you don’t want to learn? Then so be it, off you go and let the ones who do want to learn be permitted to do so.

Persisting in seeking external causes will cause this lack of educational attainment to persist. Motivation or the lack of it is the problem, and it’s becoming multigenerational.
