GM confirms Bolt 50-state electric car built in Mich. (a new ObamaMobile!)
Reuters ^ | 02/12/15

General Motors Co (GM.N) said Thursday it will build the Chevrolet Bolt electric car at an assembly plant near Detroit, where it will invest $200 million for the project.

The compact Bolt, shown as a concept vehicle at the Detroit auto show last month, is designed to have a range of 200 miles, and will cost about $30,000 apiece after tax breaks.

GM's announcement confirms a report last week by Reuters that the Bolt would be produced at the under-used Orion assembly plant in Michigan.

The only electric car currently available with a 200-mile range is the Tesla Model S, which starts at $71,070 before tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs).

From what little I know about alternative fuel sources I think the Honda Clarity might be the best attempt so far:

I understand that the battery production process and subsequent battery disposal is quite a nasty business for electric vehicles.

But why even have “alternative fuel” cars? God provides more than enough oil, gas and coal for us to use until the End of Days because it’s constantly being created. Don’t buy into the “fossil fuel” crap.

Oil, natural gas and coal come from a process that goes on deep in the Earth. Whether the process will ever be explained by science is unclear. I personally believe the creation of our energy sources could be a supernatural phenomenon.

Our local college built a new parking lot last year and installed a charging station. It’s been snowy this winter and I have never seen tire tracks by it.

Cut out the $12,000 or so in tax credits for elec vehicles and they will all go away.

Nobody is going to pay 40K for an exploding golf cart if they have to buy it with their own money.

Here in Minnesota, I have several neighbors with EVs. They’ve quit trying to drive them in winter except for those rare 40+ degree days. Most EVs are third (or fourth) cars anyway. Rich people toys.

Even old Beetles would start and run in the harsh cold winters. I guess Reddy Kilowatt is not a big cold start fan.

Where do ya hang the engine heater, uuhh,, where’s the engine? Where do ya squirt the ether?

LOL

It’s the short battery life and inadequate heating and defrost that seems the problem.

When it’s really cold, a lot of excess IC combustion engine eventually thaws out the whole vehicle. It’s not quite the same with an EV. Sure, they can be driven, but people with pockets deep enough to buy them can afford to avoid any discomfort.

It won't take long for the unions to make it not work on the manufacturing end. All smoke and mirrors. Never will work. With unions the cars will cost 100k, and be subsidized 90. This plan gets the cars sold and more money in the union coffers.

I will believe the 200 mile range when I see it. Remember all the hype over the VOLT? An innovative gas/electric concept car that ended up in production a hybrid that was inferior to every hybrid on the market.

If everyone can agree on the SAE J1772 standard for charger connections—especially the current (pun not intended here!) standard that includes both AC and DC charging—the Bolt might actually be a viable car for commuting. Let’s see if Tesla is willing to upgrade their charging stations to use the J1772 standard connector.

Another DNC money grab. The donors as investors get 200 milion. A car that will never roll off the line. The taxpayer funds it.

And Hillary has a grub stake for 2016.
