CNN Anchor: ‘Our Rights Do Not Come From God’

During a heated discussion over gay marriage, CNN morning Anchor Chris Cuomo opined that the unalienable rights endowed to all Americans do not come from God.

Cuomo was debating Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. Near the end of the back-and-forth and after Moore argued that rights cannot be handed down by men, Cuomo blurted out:

“Our rights do not come from God, your honor, and you know that. They come from man... That’s your faith, that’s my faith, but that’s not our country. Our laws come from collective agreement and compromise.”

Maybe Mr. Cuomo flunked elementary civics. The opening sentence of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence clearly affirms:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”

It may be more convenient to Cuomo’s political philosophy that a select few are empowered to grant rights to the masses, but it certainly is not part of this country’s foundation.

What’s worse is Cuomo is advocating “collective” rights. He speaks as if every American right can simply be overturned at a whim simply because "times change." “Sure, freedom of speech was great in 1789, but we've evolved beyond that as a collective society.” This is a very dangerous slope on which to tread.

Maybe CNN will help their anchors learn American history on the network’s new game show. Chris Cuomo desperately needs the tutoring.

Basically, they believe that your rights are determined by Man’s definition of right and wrong,
determined by those who are in power.

Essentially, might makes right.

The government is their God. Didn’t you hear that crazy azz elijah Cummings? “People Come to Government to Feed Their Souls”. Something in the Bible about worshiping false idols, now let me see where is that again..........oh yea, ALL OVER.

Can Cuomo’s communist roots be more evident; it has become clear the progressive liberal democrat communists; feel increasingly confident in crawling out from under their rock and pronouncing their victory in fundamentally changing America.

Our Free Republic is the responsibility of “We The People” yet we do nothing while a handful of intellectual elitists run rough shod; thinking I suppose the thoroughly corrupt election system will somehow eventually restore our Free Republic. Hopefully I am being overly cynical and pessimistic; just wrong in my assessment, but still I find no comfort or confidence in what I’m seeing.

I happened to speak last night to an old friend from childhood. He’s a quirky atheist but generally not a complete nimwit. So I was astonished to learn during our conversation that he didn’t “get” natural rights.

Me: Do you have rights?

Him: Yes, but I mean they don’t come from God.

Me: Well where do they come from? They have to come from somewhere or they don’t exist.

Him: Silence

Me: Does the Constitution grant rights to you or protect your rights?

Him: Protect them

Me: That is because those rights are inherent to you. You’re simply born with them.

I think I made a breakthrough.

It’s not in their purview to be able to do that. I could ask “What happens when my neighbor says my house belongs to him?” WELL ... he can say it, but nothing happens from simply what he says.

Basically the U.S. Supreme Court works from the respect given to it from the people and the other two branches of government ... and not from any real power that they can project themselves. If the other two branches of government ignore the U.S. Supreme Court because they’ve gone completely outside their Constitutional bounds, the court has no ability to force anything themselves.

The decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court carry WEIGHT and POWER only because people and the other two branches of government RECOGNIZE and RESPECT it.

If you want to see a liberal’s head explode, tell him that God is mentioned four times in the one-page Declaration of Independence. When he disagrees or can’t find them, give him this:

“Nature’s God”
“their Creator”
“Supreme Judge of the world”
“divine Providence”

The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are two different things. The latter should not be quoted when talking about law. It is not not a legal document and has no legal standing.

The Supreme Court (or lesser federal courts) outlawing laws prohibiting same-sex marriage does not constitute collective agreement or compromise. Fining Christian bakers $150,000 for refusing to service gay weddings does not constitute collective agreement and compromise. It constitutes tyranny.

The worldview underlying the Declaration of Independence was the prevailing worldview of those who wrote the Constitution, and the idea of God as the ultimate author or guarantor of natural law and human rights was widespread in this country well into the 20th century. It is hardly a fringe sentiment in our cultural and legal traditions, as evidenced by the practice of swearing on the Bible. Even JFK, in his inaugural address, said "Here on earth, God's work must truly be our own."

But the courts do examine the Congressional Record to determine Congress' intent and state of mind when ruling on many laws. The Declaration of Independence is America's intent and state of mind.
