A Montana homeowner was sentenced to 70 years in prison for the “stand your ground” killing of German exchange student.

Markus Kaarma, 30, was convicted in December of deliberate homicide after he gunned down 17-year-old Diren Dede in his garage. He’ll have to serve 20 years before he’s eligible for parole.

I don’t know the full facts of this case but I have to question why the kid was in his garage in the first place.

Good, The shooter had no reasonable grounds for shooting

I have no problem with him using bait to lure in the fish, but he didn’t have to kill him.

” Kaarma, upset about previous burglaries, lured the teen to his Missoula home, prosecutors said. He left the garage door partially open and baited the trap with a purse while he laid in wait with a shotgun, prosecutors said. aarma fired low three times as Dede scrambled for cover, and then reloaded for the fatal headshot, a detective testified. The teen had begged for his life, Kaarma’s girlfriend told detectives.”

(The girlfriend later recanted, but I tend to believe the first story.)

This was not a case of “stand your ground” at all no matter how much the LSM tries to spin it. This was a case of cold blooded murder by a homeowner lying in wait.

From a legal perspective, you're right. "Stand your ground" applies to cases where your life is at risk. You can't shoot a person for trespassing or theft (unless it's a nighttime break-in and you can't tell if the intruder is armed, and even then you'll probably lose the civil case).

Having said that, sometimes two wrongs make a right. The kid was obviously a thief and an all-around scumbag, and even though there was no legal right to shoot him, the world is obviously a better place without him.

I consider this a win-win.

A thief is dead and a reckless idiot is in prison.

In most places you can’t hunt over a baited trap.

Which is what he did.

70 years... and this is “more humane” than a simple death penalty?

No legal right? Where was the thief when he was shot?

The media is still lying about so-called “bait”, too. Never mind the so-called witnesses to Kaarma’s alleged bragging.

I don’t know the full facts of this case but I have to question why the kid was in his garage in the first place.

Allegedly, the "German" (actually Turkish) exchange student was looking for alcohol to steal.

This case is pretty cut and dry. The homeowner made it clear to witnesses that he was setting a "mantrap" in response to previous thefts by intentionally leaving his garage open and lying in wait with a shotgun for whomever entered. And, well... that's not legal.

The judge ought to get seventy years instead.

The “kid” was a man and in the garage to steal. That said SYG laws still require that you have a reasonable fear for your safety. The homeowner in question could not even see the thief when he started firing blindly into the garage. Legally the guy was in the wrong. From a moral standpoint, were I a juror, I wouldn’t want to see the guy get 70 years for executing a thief.

“I don’t know the full facts of this case but I have to question why the kid was in his garage in the first place.”

The home owner protected his $4.00 six-pack of Old Milwaukee and the only price he will pay is the $100,000 he paid his lawyer and 70 years in the State Pen.

Sounds like a great investment.

Sorry, but if a perp goes for bait, committing a CRIME, he is fair game.
