State-Led Push to Force Constitutional Convention Gains Steam With High-Profile Republican Support
Fox News ^ | 14 February 2015

A state-level campaign to rein in the federal government by calling an unprecedented convention to amend the U.S. Constitution is gaining steam, picking up support from two high-profile Republicans as more states explore the idea.

Coburn, a legendary government-waste watchdog, announced this week that he has joined the effort by becoming a senior adviser for the group Convention of States Action, which wants states, not just Congress, to pass constitutional amendments.

Article V of the Constitution states amendments can be ratified either by Congress or by states if two-thirds of them petition Congress to call a convention. Then, any amendment proposed at the convention must be ratified by three-fourth, or 38, states.

So far, the Alaska, Florida and Georgia legislatures have each passed a resolution in support of a convention, and 25 more are considering one, according to group.

“Our founders anticipated the federal government might get out of control,” Coburn said Tuesday. “And they gave us a constitutional mechanism to rein it in.”

Meanwhile, Ohio GOP Gov. John Kasich, a potential 2016 White House candidate, has recently concluded a six-state tour in which he has asked legislators to support the convention, largely to push the balanced budget idea.

“Who the heck thinks we should keep spending without any regard to the consequences?” Kasich, a fiscal hawk and former House Budget Committee chairman, asked in South Dakota. “I don’t care if you’re a Republican, a Democrat or a Martian. This is not what we should be doing as a nation. It’s irresponsible.”

Kasich, who claims credit for crafting a balanced federal budget before leaving Congress in 2000, gave a similar pitch week last month in Utah, urging state lawmakers to pass a convention resolution, which has failed there in past years.

I answered that in Post #25.

I have a Publius Essay in the works for the 82nd anniversary of the New Deal (March 4) that addresses some of that. I have a sense of what it will take for people to see that they've been had by the Progressives.

So, again, what are your potential solutions to the problem?

I did a quick look at your profile, thanks for posting it so I can adjust my response.

Paraphrasing, the founders of our country stated that our form of government was for a moral people, with a belief in God.

Well, we’ve turned away from that way of thinking. An historical analysis will bare that out. I have stated that if you voted for Obama you are either ignorant or evil. The people/voters are the ones that need to change their views and hearts. That might happen as things get worse.

I am not looking for a Constitutional convention to bail us out. I look for Americans to wake up and put rightful and honorable men in office.

Voters cannot put people like Obama and Kitzhaber (and the rest) in office and expect a different outcome.

I know where I’m throwing my support because here are your options...

1) Article V Convention to propose amendments

2) State Nullification

3) Secession

4) CW2

That's pretty much how I see it too. Time to go full bore for Article V. If that's hijacked then down the list.

Most FReepers are aware of these links, but I post anyway for review and for people new to Article V. It is our responsibility to make Article V the most understood aspect of the US Constitution.

The longer we wait, the bigger the risk of nullification, secession or outright civil war.

Read Mark Levin’s book, The Liberty Amendments.

Therein, he destroys all of your objections to a Convention of the States.

your people skills are a bit lacking ... LOL

I began the Anti-17th Amendment/Pro-Article V discussion at FR on the 17th's hundred year anniversary, April 8th 2013.

Since then, I've engaged dozens of skeptical freepers, and spent an hour in face-to-face discussion with my FL state assemblyman over the necessity of 17A repeal/Article V.

You are the first freeper I'm aware of to announce efforts to "work the other side," to stymie the exercise of a basic, God-given right that is needed like never before.

But, a republic demands an informed populace; its your choice to be lazy and limit yourself to the of musings and deceptions of Phyllis Schlafly.

No “ink on paper” is going to make a difference with the people we’ve got out there now. “Old or new” ... until you change the people, it’s still going to be ink on paper.

Well, I should be clear about the “Suicide” remark. I believe a Phoenix will rise from the ashes.

However, and this is a little off topic, I was talking to my wife this morning and said that if technology and cultural change is enabled to continue to grow exponentially as it has the last two hundred years, within a hundred years (probably half that time, actually) there will be no place in it for “normal” human beings.

It’s one of the reasons I think the Lord’s return is pretty imminent. It’s also why I view all of this political hijinx similarly to how a Seattle football fan viewed the Superbowl. It didn’t matter how you played the game. In the end, one decision cost you the game, but then everybody went back to their job and life the next day.

This life is a mist. It will get much worse - as we are seeing - and we will lose. And then the Lord returns and we go on to “reality”, which is called eternity.

If one disagrees, they’re gonna be working the other way ... it goes with disagreement.

It sounds like you’re saying something like this (i.e., in a similar vein) ... “You may disagree with my candidate in this election but why are you trying to get that other candidate elected? You’re sabotaging my candidate by doing so!” ... :-) ...

Not in WI. The state legislature is in the repub majority right now and we have a republican governor. This is true in 23 other states. And the repubs control 68 out of 98 state legislatures.

The repubs have never had this type of control before and it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot. If not now when?

Most legislators are living in the same communities they represent. They are more answerable to the people. You have more control over local elections than you do federal. I have found that at least here in WI they tend to be more conservative than Congress.

Waiting to elect more conservative candidates is a fool’s game. It seems Washington has corrupted many of those we have sent. It would take too much time that we don’t have to replace enough of them who remained true to their word to take control over a congress that is determined to shut them out of the process.

Ultimately the responsibility for governing lies with us, the people. We didn’t get this republic by whining about how hard and impossible it was going to be. The founders had all the odds against them and it was quite an undertaking to get this republic in the first place.

I think what we see today is just a lack of will and laziness. Well I have news for people like that. No one in DC is going to hand your Constitution and your Republic back to you. You are going to have to take it back one way or another. Those running the country right now have no reason to change. They have nice cushy jobs, the press on their side and bennies that the rest of us can only dream of. We have to change because they will not.

Corruption will always be with us. Man will always be sinful. One of our founders said that if men were all angels there would be no need for government. No one is coming to save us. We are going to have to save ourselves however I see a definite lack of will. The problem isn’t evil, it’s apathy.
