What are the Russians going to do? Build a massive mosque (Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque) like they did in Chechnya or install sharia law? Russia’s muslim population is about 12%. In 2030 its going to be about 15%. Within a few years, muslims will make up half the conscripts in the Russian army.

The Russians see an opportunity to get back in the good graces of the Middle East. The USA is about to get kicked out.

Russia has been tacitly, even openly, supporting Bashar al-Assad all along, and has made it clear the ISIS movement is definitely a terrorist organization.

If the Current Occupant will not step up and take effective steps to eradicate (not contain) ISIS, then Russia is more than willing to step into the breach, and thus isolate and marginalize the territory once known as “the United States of America”.

Russia then becomes the liberator that frees the world of the threat of militant Islamic Jihadist terrorism. After all, they kicked the Nazis out of their position some seventy years ago, and they are practiced in the art of eliminating existential threats. Sometimes they fail, considering Afghanistan, but they have never forgotten who the REAL enemy is.

The Muslims (Tartars) have been there since the 8th century. I believe there are only 5 mosques in Russia. We have more churches in our little Town.

Syria is important to Russia because Qatar wants to have a pipeline headed in that direction and Russia doesn’t. Obama doesn’t want his deal with Iran messed up because of Syria so he just keeps acting like he wants to deal with Assad but he doesn’t really. He is probably glad ISIS took the heat off of him for that.

Out of date article but there is a hell of a lot more than “5 mosques in Russia” proper. In the muslim territories controlled by russia (such as Chechnya) there are numerous mosques.
