The latest cold snap has almost all of Lake Erie covered by ice.
The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory says ice has formed across close to 94 percent of the lake. That's the highest percentage out of all of the Great Lakes.
Just two years ago at this time of the year, only about half of the lake had ice cover.
The Northeast Ohio Media Group in Cleveland reports that the lake reached 100 percent ice coverage only three times since records have been kept.
The most recent time was in 1996.
That is correct.
The locks at Sault St. Marie also close down because the St. Mary’s River freezes over. Coast Guard ice breakers try to keep it open for part of the winter. I have worked on lake freighters, actually called ore boats, on what is called the winter run. Usually hauling coal or iron ore between ports on Lake Michigan and Lakes Huron and Erie. But as noted sometime Erie freezes over.
I’m not sure about that. The local weather soothsayer said that even though Lake Erie is frozen over, we can still get snow from Lake Huron.
We’re getting a squall right now.
What does this say about the ice in the rest of the Great Lakes?

Bill Nye the Lie: Yes, the water is cold because througout winter warm presents as cold due to the transmigrational tendencies of the earth acting like a heat pump sucking the heat and exhaling the cold.

And anthropogenic climate change means that while it used to be cold in winter and hot in summer NOW it means that it is hot in summer and cold in winter. See how that changed?
In about 4 months, there will be dozens of folks on that pier jigging for lake-trout.
And they were really bitting yesterday and tomorrow.
