GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Cold weather records continue to fall across West Michigan and more brutal cold is on the way.
Friday mornings low of -13 degrees in Grand Rapids tied the existing record low set in 1966. Hundreds of schools closed due to the extremely cold temperatures with wind chills colder than -20 degrees.
Thursdays high of 7 degrees in Grand Rapids was a new record for the coldest high temperature for the date, and were already on pace for this to be one of the coldest February months ever.
Well briefly warm to the upper 20s on Saturday before plunging back into the deep freeze with more Arctic air next week.
Lake Michigan is lagging behind the other four Great Lakes ice cover with 54% coverage. The Great Lakes total ice cover is 85% right now and expected to grow.
Another Arctic air mass is headed to West Michigan that could be just as cold or colder for the Great Lakes region next week.
Friday morning Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Matt Kirkwood tried a science experiment on the coldest morning of the season so far. He soaked an outfit in water and left it outside in the bitter cold for about an hour. Watch what happened next by clicking on the video player below or click here. (see video at link.)
One month ago here in MA i was starting to think that we might have a relatively snow free winter, boy was i wrong.
In Cleveland, I don't like to walk around unless there's a critical mass of people that contribute to a positive environment. FWIW, it's days like today I wouldn't feel all that safe going from one place to another.
Gaia is punishing us for not imposing carbon taxes.
This cold spell was predicted decades ago by Theodor Landscheidt. I believe he had predicted that temperatures would noticeably start dropping around 2013 and keep dropping until 2030, when it will start warming up again.
It’s all that money spent to stop Global Warming - THEY WENT TOO FAR!!
I woke up at 6am and the recorded temperature was -7.4 degrees here in Stafford, Virginia.
It was -28 degrees Fahrenheit up in Warren County, PA this morning.
Ah, yes, ice storms in Texas. Returned to DFW airport once to find my car encased in ice. Found a styrofoam cup in the trash, trudged back and forth from bathroom to car to throw water on the drivers’ side door lock and to clear a small patch on the windshield. Was finally able to get into the car - then discovered the passenger side of the door was ice free.
Our high temperatures are not even getting up to the average low temperatures, and I’m not even in the UP!
“Cant wait to see what Joe Bastardi says tomorrow!”
Joe has had this thing nailed for sometime now. Looking forward to tomorrows thread.
Climate chaaaaaaannnge!
Were looking at a pretty late-season ICE STORM early next week here in Texas. This is unheard of.
Not completely unheard of.
I remember one April in Texas, when I was in college, a group of us took advantage of the warm April weather to lay out and catch some rays. The following weekend a snow and ice storm hit and we were without power due to (downed) iced power lines! That was in April...and it happened within days....went from nice, 80º sunshine to an ice storm, like that!
Y'all are having a heat wave east of us! It was seven below last night...and currently thirteen degrees.
I just hope this weather is killing some bugs.
I wonder why nobody says that the anti-warming tactics have been incredibly successful and now we need to move back to driving gas guzzlers and burning more fossil fuels? I mean, why is the answer to global warming always “we need to do more” when the correct response should be “maybe we’ve already done too much”?
My side of the Rockies have been spectacular. Warm (for this time of year) and sunny. My sympathies for y’all suffring from another global warming blast.
I over exaggerated, not unheard of, but still pretty rare this close to March.
Yes, it is pretty rare.
Stay safe!
“just one more question sir”. If all the initiatives to fix Global Warming work will the weather get colder?
