Great Lakes “likely to have the most ice since records began,” says meteorologist

“Great Lakes ice is now running ahead of last year and ice will increase with more brutal cold coming,” says meteorologist Joe d’Aleo. “We are likely to have the most ice since records began.”

“By the end of February the entire country east of the Rockies will have averaged below normal,” says d’Aleo. “Boston will have either the coldest or second coldest month in their history. It is nearly 13F below normal in Cleveland and all points east for February. Boston has the second most snow for the season and is very likely to be the snowiest ever by the end of the winter. They blew away the all time monthly snow record by 18 inches and could end up with 6 feet if models are right in 1 month. Ice has clogged Delaware Bay and New York and Boston Harbors.”

“Ice is seen as far south as off the New Jersey Coast and will likely clog Boston and New York Harbor in the brutal cold of the next 10 days. Freezing spray warnings are in effect in the waters around NYC this morning.”

Algore doesn’t need a break, being worth somewhere between $200 and $300 million which includes huge payoffs from Apple Computer and Al Jazeera.

Interesting that it was headed for Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin.

It must have been due to arrive in April or something because there was no way it was reaching its destination anytime soon.

Good post, SkyDancer! To the liberal warmist nuts, let's ask "And when you put ice in a glass does the water level rise higher than if you'd put in the water that made that ice?"

So hypothetically, the expansion of ice in the arctic and Antarctic means what? (if oceans were a steady body of water...which they are not)

SB is on Lake Michigan. Usually open to lower lakes traffic year round, but not this year...

That makes sense. Lake St Claire and the straits freeze every year but that’s what icebreakers are for.

Lake Michigan (the back yard) did the strangest thing last night while we slept.

It had frozen as far as the eye could see as of yesterday. Right now, it has opened up and is water as far as the eye can see. Yes there are some small ice pieces, but it's virtually all unfrozen water. So far the clouds have not entirely opened and we can only see a couple of miles, but this is a shocker. The temps last night were still below 20 degrees. Right now our digital outside thermometer is reading 24.

This makes no sense, I can only explain it as a possible current in the lake, whatever the explanation, it has opened up. If someone had told me this would happen from last night to this morning, I would have laughed and called them insane.

Cotton is about halfway between Duluth and Eveleth on US-53 in northeastern Minnesota. That area typically sees the lowest temperatures anywhere in the Lower 48 states during the winter months.

FWIW, Eveleth is the home of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. A disproportionate number of the players on the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team grew up within a hundred miles of that place.
