US senator said that United States would continue to help Peshmerga forces in providing air support, training and with provision of arms

ERBIL, Iraq

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s president, Masoud Barzani, met with U.S. Senator Jack Reed, who is ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Saturday, an official statement said.

According to the official statement, Barzani and the U.S. senator discussed the progress of the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and U.S.- led coalition support for Peshmerga forces.

During the visit, Barzani expressed his gratefulness to the U.S. senator and the American people for their support.

“Fighting the ISIL terrorists cannot be the responsibility of Kurdistan and members of the international coalition alone. Other countries must also step up their efforts and must help to stop the flow of ISIL fighters, and also to dry up their sources of funding,” Barzani said.

The statement reported that U.S. Senator Reed paid tribute to Barzani’s leadership and use of Peshmerga forces in pushing back ISIL.

He highlighted that the United States would continue to help Peshmerga forces by providing air support, training and weaponry.

“The people of the United States have a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by the people of Kurdistan in confronting ISIS terrorists and for their generosity in providing refuge to many internally displaced people from other parts of Iraq,” the senator said.

Iraq has suffered a security vacuum since June last year, when ISIL stormed Mosul and declared what it called a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria.

The secretary-general of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs said recently that at least 999 Peshmerga fighters were killed during ISIL's invasion of Mosul on June, 2014. The U.S. is leading an international coalition against the terrorist group and has carried out numerous airstrikes on it in Iraq and Syria.

Is this Jarrett approved? Does it have to be? I remember reading that the Iraqi government wasn't sharing their funding with the Kurds so I can agree with them having their own supplies. Wouldn't put a dime in a bank since the daesh will simply rob the bank.

hmmm. a poke or thinking of running? from jack reed’s site:

Reed also serves as Ranking Member of the Armed Services Committee, where he has played a pivotal role in safeguarding our nation. In 2002, he voted against giving President George W. Bush the authority to go to war in Iraq because it was an ill-planned diversion from the war on terrorism. But he has always worked across the aisle to support our troops, and was instrumental in convincing Defense Secretary Robert Gates to continue serving in the Obama Administration and implement the plan to withdraw forces from Iraq.

**********

so he votes against going into iraq but now wants to arm the Kurds. why are democrats so all over the place. Never understood how anyone in the military could be a dem.

ooooohhhhh, I didn’t read enough...its the money. building new subs in rhode island.

Rhode Island’s defense industry is critical to national security and our state’s economy, and Senator Reed has been a leader at the federal level in growing Rhode Island’s defense sector and bringing resources to the state. Thanks to his efforts on the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees, coupled with Rhode Island’s talented defense workers, the U.S. Navy plans to begin building the next generation of submarines in the Ocean State, creating thousands of new, good-paying jobs in Rhode Island in the coming years.

shouldn’t that be a conflict of interest?
