The difference with the mafia is that at least when you pay, they leave you alone; they don’t much care how you live the rest of your life or what your private beliefs are. They may at times actually “protect” you from real outside threats...if only to keep the gravy train extortions going!

Another difference, people both FEAR and RESPECT the Mafia, while most people only FEAR the government.
