I think it's stupid to punish the kid for the parents mistake. Secondly, where is the humanity? Everyone else is perfect at everything, right? It's a fundamental law of nature, that when you are running late the car will refuse to start. It's just the way it is.

Maybe mom works nights and has trouble getting up in the AM. My mom hated getting up in the morning. We were on our own in the morning. Maybe the teachers would prefer the little boy walk himself to school so he won't be late. It's first grade.

In a non-harmful way, the school is sending a message to the mother to get her act together. Thanks to bleeding hearts and liberals, the schools have no other leverage when it comes to discipline problems fostered by the bad behaviour of parents.
