Police find Toronto tunnel builders, say they meant no harm

The builders of Toronto’s mysterious tunnel just wanted a place to “hang out,” police said Monday after announcing they had found the two men responsible and would not be charging them.

The pair, whom police tracked down thanks to tips from the public, told investigators they built the tunnel for “personal reasons” and their explanation has been verified, Constable Victor Kwong said. Constable Kwong said police have determined there was never any criminal intent or danger to public safety. Toronto bylaw enforcement said they would look into whether any city rules had been breached and whether any tickets or fines would be issued.

The fact that authorities advertised the find made me wonder about the cops.
If it was nefarious then the perps would be long gone.

Police found a rosary and a Remembrance Day poppy in the cave. Patriotic Catholics.

Some friends of mine and I dug/built something like this when we were about 12 years old. It was less than half the size of the tunnel described in the article and it was 100% on private property, but we really did build it just to have a place to hang out. No nefarious intent.

It even had a working fireplace.

Well, we know it’s not the Trailer Park Boys, because they would just sneak in through the sewers, with a fresh change of clothes in a plastic bag.

That’s some substantial timber there.

Hefty investment if purchased.

Stolen, “re-purposed”, ?

Looks like old hardwood, fresh sawcuts on top. Maybe was originally beams?

That’s what I was thinking. If it were a couple of kids ages 12-17, sounds pretty normal. Older than that.....?

yes perhaps these particular diggers were innocents
but in today’s world
with all the Arab terrorists digging attack (and arsenal) tunnels,

anyone (secretly) digging big tunnels is going to raise suspicion

just life in the modern world, I guess
