Key conservatives don't rule out temporary ObamaCare extensions

Several key conservative lawmakers aren't ruling out support for proposals to temporarily extend people’s ObamaCare plans if the Supreme Court strikes down subsidies under the law.

“I don’t want to prejudge that debate right now, I want to assess the options,” said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) raised concerns about how long the extension would be, but also suggested he could consider it.

“I think it should be limited, perhaps, but I don’t shut the door on that,” he said.

Republicans are looking to show the Supreme Court that they have a plan ready if the court rules to invalidate subsidies for around 7.5 million people in at least 34 states in the case of King v. Burwell, set for arguments on Wednesday.

A central part of the plans unveiled this week is a proposal to provide financial assistance to people losing their subsidies so that they can temporarily keep their ObamaCare plans and avoid disruption. Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), as well as Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), have proposed versions of that idea.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) was a leader in the 2013 effort to defund ObamaCare, but he is interested in the extension idea.

He and other lawmakers recently met with Sasse. “We’re in the process of evaluating it, but I love that forward thinking, [making] sure we have a plan and he’s doing a good job of that,” Meadows said of Sasse.

Asked if it would be politically difficult to pass Sasse’s proposed extension of plans, Meadows said “No, I think the compassionate way, you have to deal with the reality.”

Well now that they have caved on the amnesty edict, they can start to pretend to appose Obama again.

Here is how this plays out. Obama will call on the Republicans to establish federal exchanges. The Republicans will screw around until the last minute with a few bills that try to sound conservative. The Senate Democrats will block everything from making it to the floor, while wailing that Republicans are leaving the poor exposed to ruin. The rinos will beat up the conservative Republicans with as much zeal as Obama and the Democrats. Even if they get a bill to Obama, he will veto it and blame it on uncaring conservatives. At the last minute, Republicans, under the capable leadership of the 97 pound weakling will cave, and give Obamacare the assistance it needs to continue to grow.

Oh, and I forgot the mention. We will get beat up by Freepers who want us to believe we can’t win this fight. We need to focus on a fight we can win. (which apparently doesn’t exist)

I don’t know. Sessions has pretty good cred.

If the goal with saying this is to convince Roberts and Kennedy that there’ll be a soft landing if they kill the subsidies, then I don’t have a problem with it.

"I love that forward thinking ... the compassionate way" Our Heroes HEad On gif photo: HEAD ON 1251715658390.jpg Hey guys ... I can't afford health insurance so I pay a penalty so people who don't pay taxes can have insurance. So I'm paying $600 for CT scan today. That's forward thinking? And compassionate? You sound like Michelle talking about "Some are going to have to give up their piece of pie so others can have more." What good are you?

Have heard a rumor that Obamacare has another tax buried inside it.

This tax/fee is supposed to be 3% ‘transfer fee’ on all real estate transactions.

Since the home sales market is still moribund, this could be a killer.

Anyone know if this is true & when it comes into effect???

“I think it should be limited, perhaps, but I don’t shut the door on that,” he said.

Yes, it would only last until the next "limited" extension.

I think it was 2 years ago when I started calling for a second party.

I also said winning the house in 2010 was probably going to turn out worse for the country than if the dems had held onto it. Maybe we should let the democrats have it all. They had it all for 2 years then was thrown out in a landslide.

The 3% only applies to a certain priced house. In fact, I think the number is $300,000 and up. The median priced home in Houston is near that amount. They’ve gone up that fast.

It may be a half million.

‘You don’t consider Cruz and Sessions “key conservatives”?’

Actions speak louder than words.
