President Obamas drive to ban a popular form of ammunition used in the AR-15 and other rifles is drawing new fire from conservative groups representing gun owners as well as members of Congress.
A lawsuit has been threatened by the Second Amendment Foundation, which says the ploy is a backdoor attempt to do what the administration has failed to do through legislation ban the AR-15.
But the battle is heating up on both sides of the issue in Congress.
It is prudent to consider the likely use of ammunition in these non-sporting handguns, and the danger they present to law enforcement officers and our communities, Maloney said in the letter.
Maloney fought to ban the AR-15 rifle and similar weapons in a failed attempt back in 2013. Conservatives see the latest move by the Obama administration as a sneaky attempt to do the same thing, rendering the weapons effectively useless by removing ammunition from the market.
The Second Amendment Foundations general counsel sent a letter to the ATF Director B. Todd Jones Wednesday

As you can see in this website - which I order from in bulk - 5.56 comes in 55, 62, and 69...
http://www.ammoman.com/223-556
so like 62 will give you a velocity of 2750 - where the 69 will give you a 3000 Muzzle Velocity...depends on what the shooter needs...
Not all 5.56mm (.223) ammo is targeted, right?
Correct. Only the green tip M855 ammo is under consideration.
Is it just the 55 grain ammo?
It is specifically not 55 grain ammo. M855 is 63 grain.
Is it the most popular round in this caliber?
That depends on your "area of operations". Most indoor ranges specifically disallow green tip ammo because the steel tip could damage their backstops and other range structure, due to its better penetration capabilities.
So for me, for instance, I have a couple of thousand rounds of M855 but I don't shoot it - rather I shoot the M193 55 grain ammo at my local range.
(OK, occasionally I'll sneek a few rounds of M855 just to verify point of impact difference)
“That depends on your “area of operations”. Most indoor ranges specifically disallow green tip ammo because the steel tip could damage their backstops and other range structure, due to its better penetration capabilities.”
You neglected to mention that most indoor ranges also ban use of all rifle center fired ammo regardless of caliber and ammo configuration. With the exception of a shooting tube, usually 50 yards, most indoor ranges are specifically designed for hand gun use only.
Green tip went from $650.00 to $705 per K at Ammoman since Friday.
Guess what?
I contacted both of my GOP (RINO) Senators and my Congressman (GOP).
And......I got NOTHING BUT CRICKETS!
I’m done voting for Republicans.
I love the green tip round! But anybody willing to pay that much for it is insane!
You can get way better rounds for half the price.
Plenty of people hunt with ARs. And ARs are selling by the millions. You sound pretty ignorant on the subject.
Supply and Demand!!!
Around here the AR is the primary coyote killer and in 6.5 Grendel is becoming the deer slayer.
Don’t worry, the republican will stop.....Oh wait.....crap, we’re screwed!
My recommendations:
Immediately stop putting green tips on M855 production.
Start additional production of ever so slightly different ammo:
M856-Pink tip
M857-Brown tip
M858-Gray tip
etc.
Overwhelm the idiots.
I can't think of any ranges here in Texas that are pistol only (maybe LE indoor ranges).
Every indoor range I've been to has at least a few 100 yard rifle lanes (gotta sight in those deer guns somewhere!). Limitations are generally no steel ammo and only slugs in shotguns.
Your mileage, as they say, may vary...
“..... it’s time to take a couple of minutes and contact your Congressman. “.......
Does ANYONE really think that our so called congress representative will do a damn thing? Those lazy bastards are too busy cozying up to odumbo’s ilk to help the people who actually put them into those cushy positions. When we ask them to do their damn jobs, it is evident it falls on deaf ears. I may be alone in my thinking but most of them need to be “exported” out of the country. Perhaps they can fill the vacancies created by the “new American’s” they themselves have allowed to take over this once great land.
I worked with a guy who had an AR-15 and used it for hunting. Flat trajectory and a decent range in the right environment. Most use them for target shooting, but they have some value for taking game.
I personally believe that the AR15 is the worst piece of crap to ever be manufactured. My M16 jammed on me in a fire fight. That told me everything I needed to know about the AR15.
Cartridges on the other hand are a completely different matter and there are many firearms that will use the same ammo. I own a nice single shot bolt action one.
Banning bullets is a stupid act perpetrated by ignorant people.
Where did they get the guy with the rifle?
He’s over weight; he has ammo everywhere you could hang ammo; he’s got a pistol strapped to his waist, a knife protruding from his pocket and he looks like a donut cop showing up at the range for his required annual qualification.
I wonder if he has ammo for his 22-45 Ruger pistol.
Which state are you from?
Boehner funded this agency so it can be used to destroy America.
Boehner has to go.
Georgia where RINO’s grow from the ground up.
