I’m not up to speed with the politics of this case. But if the Army isn’t violating a law or military regulation by referring to Manning as a man, then this Army appeals court is wrongly legislating such a law from the bench imo.

Yes, it denotes a gender, neuter. Of course, my father, a soft-spoken Presbyterian minister, not given to cussing, years ago when the rubbish of replacing sex with gender was just getting started, proposed that the right pronoun to get rid of “gender discrimination” was “s/h/it”. Perhaps future filings could take up his suggestion when a pronoun is needed in reference to Private Manning.
(Of course I’m still waiting for whoever set up the protocols so that an Army PFC with a security clearance could access diplomatic cables to be thrown in the stockade in a cell next to Manning.)
