Maybe I was just too literal-minded at that point in time. It occurred to me afterwards that the Koran boasted about being written in Arabic so that the Arabs could understand it (versus any other religious writing; one in particular) and that the author (so claimed to be Muhammad) was indeed about Arab dominance even over converts.
