Scott Walker supports ethanol mandate at Iowa summit
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | March 7, 2015 | Jason Stein and Mary Spicuzza

Des Moines — Only weeks after taking this key state in the presidential race by surprise, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defended his front-runner status in Iowa by pledging to support a federal ethanol mandate, shifting his position on renewable fuels at a Republican roundup on farm issues.

The GOP governor and a lineup of other major potential presidential contenders — including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — took the stage before hundreds of spectators and media at the Iowa Ag Summit at the state fairgrounds here.

In the moderated discussion with ethanol entrepreneur Bruce Rastetter, Walker dropped his previous flat opposition to ethanol mandates, offering a new stance that's well-suited to a state covered in cornfields. Walker signaled he now favors keeping the mandate for now and phasing it out over time — without saying over what period of time.

"I do believe it's an access issue so it's something I'm willing to go forward on renewing a (federal) Renewable Fuel Standard...so farmers going forward planting crops know what the standard is," Walker said, adding that he wanted to "get to a point where you address some of those market access issues...so you no longer need some of the subsidies."

Walker, a past critic of ethanol, acknowledged in January that he would have to spell out his position on the issue as part of his likely presidential bid. In another key issue for Iowa, Walker said that he favored drawing down federal tax credits for wind power over time.

"This is one of those where I believe it's served its purpose," Walker said of the credits. "I would support phasing that out over a period of time."(continued)

Why is this still a thing?

Haven’t we longed moved past the idea of burning corn for fuel?

Especially since there are much cheaper-to-raise non-food plants that’d be about as good, such as switch grass.

“phasing it out over time “

Sounds good to me.
Probably won’t do it as quick as I like, but probably quicker than ADM would.

I hate to sound like a one issue guy, but any politician that supports an ethanol mandate hes serious problems with his world view in general. It if it is true that Walker supports this, he just lost me. Permanently.

I mean if he gets the nomination, I’ll sit out the general presidential electionn.

I have to replace my push mower as soon as the grass starts growing again this spring, but that’s only about 1/5 the cost of a Mercedes engine.

I am so sick of my push mowers being ruined by ethanol, and this last one I had just gotten back from the official repair location from being repaired of a rotten carb, I put ethanol free high octane gas with fuel stabilizer in it, used it once, and then it refused to start the every next time.

I am thinking of getting an electric push mower, I can’t deal with this gas situation any more.

Have you seen the full quote or you are believe the MjS?

No, they haven't Perdogg. Just like the shrill leftists who were "outraged" when Walker refused to answer the evolution question, or the conservatives who swear up and down that he's for amnesty, when in fact he's made past statements that were more a critique of Washington's inability to do their jobs. Also, he's never proposed or signed any pro-illegal alien legislation as Governor.

He clearly said the subsidies would be phased out over time, just like the other green energy crap. No politician is going to eliminate these subsidies with a snap of their fingers without going through Congress first.

Cruz is continuing his steady, measured ascent, showing his true colors to everyone he addresses, and is building a big respect base with his honesty and directness.

If they are all supporting the mandate, the election is an exercise in futility on many levels.

It if it is true that Walker supports this

He supports phasing out the subsidies over time.

This is the Urinal-S--tnel up to its old tricks with a misleading headline.
