ATF apologizes for ‘error’ on ammo-ban regulations
Washington Times ^ | 3/9/15 | Dave Boyer

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is apologizing for a “publishing error” in its regulations that suggested the agency had already banned AR-15 “green tip” ammo well before officials publicly announced a proposal to outlaw the armor-piercing bullets last month. “ATF has not rescinded any armor piercing ammunition exemption, and the fact they are not listed in the 2014 online edition of the regulations was an error which has no legal impact,” the agency said in a statement. “ATF apologizes for any confusion caused by this publishing error.” In January, the ATF published an online regulations guide that

I’m having trouble deciphering that “III%”. What does it mean?

They don't have the authority to write laws, but they issue "edicts." The public has pushed back, and now BATF is issuing double talk. It really does not matter because Congress is now as significant as Stalin's Politburo and Obama is Stalin.

It means if you can find green tips, steel cored ammo for the 223 or 5.56 the price just tripled if you can find it. It also means the BATF is going to outlaw the sale of said ammo.

..."publishing error"...?

Yeah. Sure. Just like Fast and Furious was a "selling error".

These bureaucratic drones have no believability. None. Defund and get rid of this malignant agency, now.

You want “armor piercing”? I don’t know how they work on real armor, but the WPA steel jacketed stuff punches a pretty good hole in basic steel.

It’s the velocity. Which makes me think this business is a preliminary trial balloon to banning all AR ammo.

They are preempting credible resistance to jackboots securing your neighborhood somewhere down the line. Nothing to do with protecting today’s LEO personnel.

Interesting...it was less than 10 min ago that I just finished reading an e-mail that my senior Senator (John Boozman) sent me on this issue, where I expressed ro him my 2nd Amendment concerns. Here is his response:

Senator John Boozman
To
me

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the recent proposal from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to ban certain rounds of armor piercing ammunition. It is good to hear from you.

As you know, ATF has proposed an "Armor Piercing Ammunition Exemption Framework" which they plan to apply to manufacturers' requests seeking a determination that certain armor piercing projectiles qualify for a "sporting purpose" exemption. In doing such, they have reversed an almost 30 year exemption on the M855/SS109 round, commonly referred to as "green tip" ammunition. The M855 round was originally produced for the U.S. military, but was exempted by ATF in 1986 making it lawful for civilian use. ATF states that due to the creation of the "AR-type" handgun, and based on their sporting purpose criteria, the M855/SS109 round no longer qualifies for an exemption.

I share concerns on this issue, which is why I have joined my colleagues in signing onto a letter to ATF questioning their authority to create such a "Framework," and advises ATF that it should not be adopted. Like you, I believe that we must protect our Second Amendment rights. The focus of the gun debate should be on the criminals who escape tough federal penalties, not on disarming law abiding citizens. Further, this is just another example of the continued overreach of this administration to legislate through regulation, and Congress must push back, exercise oversight authority, and reign in the agencies. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor the situation and will keep your thoughts in mind should related legislation come to the floor of the U.S Senate for a vote.

Again, thank you for contacting me on this very important issue. Please be sure to sign up for our e-newsletter to stay informed on what we’re doing on behalf of Arkansans . I look forward to your continued correspondence.

Sincerely,
John Boozman
U.S. Senator

BTW...HOWDY, everyone! :-)

Negative again my lad. Talk was everywhere about this so-called up coming “ban-on-ammo” at the time of the Show ( Feb. 21st). The frenzy just wasn’t there as we here in the Carolina’s have all the ammo we would ever need if it were all banned tomorrow ! From .22LR to 30-06, just about everyone I know has been “collecting” since Crooked finger Bill was elected in the early 90’s. If the hair wasn’t standing up on yer neck then, it won’t be now. It’s a Southern thang . . . . . .

Snoot ;o)

What’s funny, is that here in California, they have banned lead ammo for hunting, in 1/3 of the state.

You must use steel, which is stupid.

I shoot .308 and that round isn’t going to stop when it hits Bambi. It’ll keep flying and there is a likely hood that it won’t stop if you hit a bear.

Insane.

Bought it from bulkammo.com in December or November (forget which). 1000 rounds for $.315/round

Should not have packed it in the canoe though. Lake Lanier is 130’ ft deep in places.

Always wear your flotation gear. Water wasn’t too cold though.

The “publishing error” and the “Armor Piercing Ammunition Exemption Framework” are two different things. The “error” was in the published print of ATF’s 2014 Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide. The “Framework” is the actual ban they are proposing.

The ban proposal for green tips/M855/SS109 is still there, folks. ATF has not backtracked an inch.
