They don’t report to their probation officer...and nothing happens to them. What’s to lose?
I thought it might be a white Occupy type who did the shooting, because most gang-bangers aren’t very good shots and just depend on blasting out a lot of bullets in every direction. But he was clearly aiming and if he had known more about shooting and had had a more powerful weapon, he would have killed both of those cops.
As soon as his probation is withdrawn he’ll start doing time for the original crime. What was it and what was the original sentence before probation?

At that range and with the cops in shoulder to shoulder riot formation, it was just like Civil War shooting: get the right elevation and simply aim at the line. He was sure to hit someone.
