SAN JOSE, Calif. The days of humans driving their own cars are numbered, according to Elon Musk.
The reason, he said, is advances in sensor and software technology will eventually make cars' onboard computers safer and better drivers than humans wielding "two-ton death machines." The Tesla CEO shared his thoughts on the future of self-driving vehicles during the keynote presentation at NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, where he appeared onstage with NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.
"In the distant future," he said, "They may outlaw driven cars because they're too dangerous."

Well, it would give the State total control over your travels by vehicle.
“Sorry, Citizen, but your chosen destination is less than 10 miles from this point. Please walk or use Public Transportation to reach your desired destination. Based on your computed BMI, you could use the exercise. Have a nice day.”
That was my question. How do you ticket a driverless car if it makes an error? Will the company that makes the software for the car be fined? Will the owner of the car be fined? Or will the occupants?
When everyone rides in a driverless car, what happens to cities and counties when that revenue goes away. Will we eliminate traffic court? Will we eliminate the need for car insurance?
What happens to the meta data of the travels of the car. How will peoples privacy be protected? How will the courts access or make use of the data. Will the government restrict your travel options?
There are a lot of social changes that come with this step. Many give too much power to the government if you ask me.
Some 50,000 dead annually from auto accidents will, once a viable bureaucratic-friendly solution appears, attract a great many polypragmatons (governmental busybodies).
Well, there could always be a “flaw” in the speed control that results in you going over the limit my a couple of miles per hour. ;-)
Or they can just fine you for attempting to drive a non-autonomous vehicle. Perhaps simply charge a fee for you to drive a non-autonomous car. A fee from which the elites would be exempt.
Very possible. But a VERY long way off.
In the year 2525 (if Man is still alive)...;’)
Long before they need to prove innocence they need to never fail. We have had autopilots in aircraft for over 100 years. Yes really, the first ones were that long ago. But we STILL don’t allow passengers to fly in a plane with no pilot. Because for most things that go well and truly wrong the autopilots only recourse is to disengage and warn the pilot to take over.
The crony capitalist is sniffing glue again.
Young James Kirk was driving his dad's Corvette. So it is a long ways off.
Put Musk in prison for inflicting electric crap on the public!!!
Bullsh1t.
Like saying you can’t drive your half-ton horse death machine. Or two-three ton horse-drawn wagon.
Can’t make your own breakfast. Might actually make something you enjoy eating.
Can’t wipe your own ass. That’s a union job you’re stealing, son.
You’re applying today’s technology issues to tomorrow’s technology. I’m not saying such problems are not a concern, but there are solutions to all problems. But your comment is about the sort of thing that impacts the “when”, not the “if”.
Not about your post, but: I find it interesting when people say that the “brain” and connectivity would not be reliable enough. Comical, actually. Have you seen the reliability of human drivers? :-D
‘Hal - Dave - ‘
That is the ‘voice’ I have heard since reading about driverless vehicles!
And cite whenever in conversation about same.
This is just the centralized government control and social engineering mindset showing through the media polished veneer of ‘entrepreneur’.
I think what will happen is that some roads will be off limits to human drivers. These roads (even surface streets) will have no traffic lights at intersections and cars will draft each other, inches (or less) apart. And many (probably most, eventually) will have no humans on board and will not even be designed to accommodate human passengers in any way.
Traffic lights will not be necessary because the cars will zip around each other at intersections without even slowing down, except when exceeding the cornering limits of the tires.
And here’s a driverless Audi doing 145 on an F1 track:
