Unmanned vehicles are also options that are being looked at, as well.

And the deck can be hardened to take the F-35B - the Spanish are doing exactly that with the ship this one is based on. It’s whether we decide to do it or not. At the moment, there’s no specific plan to do so - but it is part of the reason why the ski jump remains even though we don’t need it right now. It gives us more options than a redesign to remove it would have.

These ships are intended to spend decades in service. We don’t even know yet what might eventually be available to fly off them.

Not sure how well that’s going, USN has tried to retrofit for a couple of platforms with mixed success. Likely the deck will have to be replaced with ultra high temp alloys.

If you didn’t check the vid do so cool

I can’t understand what those folks are complaining about. I’d love to have a view of that great ship and of all the ancillary activity it generates. Forget the harbor.

Canadian airforce is looking at acquiring these as well, and it’s not a good move. Heck, Sukhoi makes better stuff. We’d be better served with a super hornet even.

My Old Man served on the Ellet DD 398 and there were only three things he'd ever talk about. The Doolittle raid, torpedoing the HMAS Canberra off Savo Island, and rescuing survivors from a cruiser during the Solomans Campaign.

Actually that's the Type 12 Frigate HMAS Parramatta (1961-1991) (or Possibly the similar HMAS Yarra)

no, checking Google Images, the Yarra had a shorter mainmast. It's the Parramatta

Yes, it's not easy - and I'm not saying the Spanish have got it right yet either. Just that we know it's a problem that can be dealt with if we decide we want to go that way. Bunkerage for the fuel the planes would need is also an issue as the tank area the Spanish currently use with their Harriers has apparently already been converted to other purposed on our new ships - they need a lot more than just the helicopters do. But it can be done if we decide we want to and are willing to spend the money at some stage.

It is only likely to be seriously considered once the F-35B has entered US service and we can see whether or not it works or not. I hope it does - partly because I would like to see Australia get back into the carrier game (when I joined the RAN, it's where I wanted to serve more than anything else, not dreaming we'd lose the capacity) and partly because if the F-35 doesn't work, it's going to mean a lot of money has been wasted, and a real hole in capabilities for us and some of our closest allies.

This sort of situation happens fairly frequently. An airport is built decades back well away from residential and commercial establishments. Developers build homes, shopping centers, etc., in the area over the ensuing years and you know the rest of the story. An acquaintance of mine bought a kennel in what was a rural area outside of a mid-size city in Ohio. The kennel thrived due to their hard work and was expanded in time. Then slowly the area around them began to build up with suburban homes ... and, of course, the complaints began.

Is Harry's Cafe de Wheels still in business just outside the entrance to the Wolloomooloo Naval Base? They used to have the best pie and peas in Sydney.

These complainers must be related to the person who called me a baby killer when my ship docked there in 1993.

Indeed, Harry's is still there.

Harry's Cafe de Wheels - a Sydney icon.

I have fond memories of receiving sailors back on board who had had a little bit more to drink than they really should have, and had been told that buying the duty Officer and duty Chief a pie would hopefully lead to a blind eye being turned to their transgression. I wound up with quite a large pile of pies.

By the way - having just looked at your profile page, have you ever read David Feintuch’s “Seafort Saga”? They might have some appeal for you, given the novel you’ve mentioned you are writing.

You were misinformed.

But I was also incorrect. Not the Parramatta which also had a lower mainmast (I shoulda checked that) Only 4 Type 12s had a LW02 Radar high mounted on the foremast. The mainmast makes this one of the second pair, either HMAS Stuart or HMAS Derwent.

I previously ruled them out because I thought they had the portside upperdeck extended all the way to the stern when the Ikara SUWM system was fitted. Apparently that happened later

HMAS Derwent with Ikara but upperdeck not yet exteded to stern

Derwent is the one in the background :<)
