Saw the video this AM. Video starts with him on the ground.
What happened prior?
The 2 other celebrated cases were caused by resisting arrest.
(I do think the police went waaay over the top in arresting the big guy for selling ‘singles’ though)

Nonsense. The cops who arrested him were from Alcohol & Beverage Control.
Thing is, in a charged or intoxicated crowd, these things can get out of control. I was on liberty in Naples, Italy back in the Seventies, and it was a rainy night. Fleet landing was clogged with men, drunk on Peroni (gag), who could not be taken back to the ship because the water was too rough.
I would guess there was several hundred men there, drunk, irritable, standing in the rain.
A fight broke out, and then spread. Then the Shore Patrol was involved. And during this time, bystanders in the crowd of men began egging people on and heaping abuse on the Shore Patrol.
It is raining, dark, under cones of light from floodlights on Fleet Landing, and it is mayhem. There were multiple fights going on, people were being wrestled to the ground and hitting it hard and out of control with Shore Patrol on top of them (which is what happens when you are drunk and multiple people wrestle with you to subdue you) and on top of all that, the crowd of un-involved sailors are yelling, cussing, saying “F**CK THE SHORE PATROL!” and so on. It was out of control. And it wasn’t racial, just drunk men.
In the middle of all this, there was one guy with a stanchion (you know, the heavy base kind with holes at the top with ropes through them to get people to follow a path) and he is wildly swinging this thing back and forth, surrounded by a bunch of Shore Patrol guys wanting to get their hands on him, but not get brained in the process. And the guy was keeping them at bay.
Suddenly, this huge guy walks right into the fray, clocks this guy who falls like a lump to the ground, and turns around and yells to the entire crowd in this unbelievably loud, booming, commanding voice: “YOU MEN SHUT UP!”
It was like a movie...almost all motion stopped in mid-action, and the whole scene was suddenly quiet and still. I had never seen anything like that before or since.
It was the Gunny for the Marine detachment on the ship. (He was later the top enlisted person killed in the Beirut barracks bombing in 1983...was a hell of a guy, by all accounts)
Point is, I have seen how fast a crowd can get out of hand and things can escalate to a serious situation. These cops, even if they were alcohol control cops, probably knew they had to get that guy out of the picture, I will bet.
You are spot on there.
So a drunken, underaged college kid tried to use a fake ID and when the police caught him, he copped a tude and got the business.
This is a “dog bites man” story.
Notice how when these things blow-up, you only see a portion of the available video and after the entire video is released, the story goes away.
And....he was an “Obamabot” low life!!! He needs a “look-in-the-mirror” reality check. Poor boy been listening to Obama/Holder/Sharpton....too much!!!
The situation you witnessed in Italy was a melee, with numerous fights going on simultaneously. I witnessed similar incidents in Norfolk, VA many years ago, and I had no problem with the SPs cracking a few heads open to bring the situation under control. The details of the situation at UVA have not yet surfaced, but the student who was roughed up and arrested apparently was drunk and obnoxious. However, there was no physical altercation until the ABC agents got involved. If the cops manhandled and arrested every student on The Corner who was drunk, obnoxious, or tried to use a fake ID, they would have to use JPJ Arena as a holding pen, every night of the week. This ABC office already has a reputation for extreme over-reaction, and that cost ABC a $200,000 legal settlement just last year. Better training and more common sense would go a long way to minimizing these types of incidents.
I don’t disagree at all, more professional training is a good thing, but we don’t know yet exactly what the cops did. All I know is what I have heard the student did, and his calling the cops racist was the thing that makes me think this honor student might have been doing the black equivalent of “Don’t you know who I am?”
My impression is that this guy was trying to rile a crowd of people up against racist cops.
A combustible situation.
