THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

Trio for Piano, Violin & Cello in G, Op. 1/2, Second Movement

This movement is marked “largo con espressione” (“very, very slowly with expression”) in 3/4 time. It’s in the remote key of E Major, and while it is not yet a Beethoven conversation with God, it’s heartfelt just the same. In spite of its major key, it has moments of pathos, something that Franz Schubert would turn into his trademark a generation later.

And thank you, Maestro, for selecting the Israel Piano Trio for this piece. They stand with us as Soldiers of Art against our ancient enemy - both theologically and geo-politicaly.

I am prepared to give my life in their defense."
