NC State temporarily bans alcohol at most fraternity events

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State University became the latest school to crack down on its fraternities by banning alcohol at events for most of the organizations, a move that came after a racially offensive pledge book was discovered and a separate sexual assault investigation launched.

A news release Friday from university spokesman Fred Hartman said the school worked with the Interfraternity Council to temporarily suspend social events that involve alcohol for more than 20 fraternities. The ban doesn't apply to historically black Greek organizations, or the Multicultural Greek Council.

The Pi Kappa Phi chapter was suspended after derogatory comments attributed to members in a notebook were found at a restaurant near campus. Separately, new details about a drug paraphernalia seizure surfaced in a search warrant related to a sexual assault allegation at Alpha Tau Omega, which was suspended earlier this month.

Excerpt per AP guidelines.

Typical overreaction by the Fun Police at State.

Nearly all of the great events we had during my time there (both fraternity related and not) are no longer allowed.

If I am not mistaken, the black fraternities do not have their own houses. At least, theirs aren’t on university property. I still don’t fully understand why they aren’t included in the ban, though.

The Tau chapter(NC State) was a bunch of racist a-holes in the 80’s as well.

I wasn’t involved in the fraternity scene when I was there (late 80’s - early 90’s).

Unless you count getting drunk at the Delta Sigma Phi Lawn Party, that is.

Tau chapter was bent of out shape because we were initiating FJN’s (slang words for gays, Jews and blacks), bespoiling their precious fraternity.
One of our pledges(black) transferred to another school during our probation and they kept losing his bid.

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Disbanded at NC State

Thursday, March 26, 2015 05:45PM

RALEIGH (WTVD) --

NC State fraternity Pi Kappa Phi was disbanded Wednesday and members ordered to vacate the on-campus house by this weekend...

NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson weighed that outrage and concern along with the school's Code of Conduct when he laid down his punishment for Pi Kappa Phi. He announced Wednesday afternoon the frat would be disbanded, booted from campus, and its charter was revoked by the national organization.

Righteous indignation is a fine thing until the alums stop giving.

You've got that right. For example:

Lonnie Poole, the founder of Waste Industries, Inc., is an alum as well as a PKP brother.

He is also the single largest donor in university history. I would love to hear his thoughts on this.

The bigger issue is that the school didn’t really debate the issue. It was like the UVa rape deal. It was a rush to condemn and punish. If a football or basketball player had left that notebook, what would have happened?
The school wouldn’t allow the discussion because they would have to explain THEIR behavior.
I see where Duke is is creating a “Bias Action Team” because someone heard something offensive on campus. Some rap music perhaps?
