Unfortunately, I think it is wishful thinking as far as Americans waking up; the left has so successfully diluted what “American” means that it has become impossible to define. The illegal alien who has never paid a penny in taxes will swear he is as American as anyone else, and one of our two parties is in complete agreement with him (and has said the same publicly for years, without consequence).
