As a kid we managed to get a loose round to discharge but the bullet harmlessly dropped to the ground a few feet away...but the cartridge case shot away like a rocket to infinity....I was 12 by the way and we didn’t try that again.
We did the same thing with shotgun shells.
Hiding behind a large rock or boulder we’d use our BB guns to shoot at the primers and then duck down immediately. Luckily, nobody got killed when the empty cartridges flew past our heads.
What fun we had as kids! I miss the good old days.
