This is the first time that I've read about a black box being found in a crash on land and the chip/card missing.
Could it have been deliberately removed?

More likely the impact was so severe the box was highly damaged and the media was thrown as debris from the internals. As I speculated on another thread, straight on impact into solid granite at 450mph is probably near or exceeding the survivability threshold of the data recorder.

Odd to say the least. But, any structure has it's structural limits. The description of the card being "missing" may be overly simplistic.
It would be stranger if the rest of the FDR guts were still there and the flash RAM was the only thing missing.
