Regards Patton and Hammelburg I wonder how much influence, if any, the Philippine POW raids had on his decision? Obviously Col Waters was the main factor in Capt Baum’s wild ride:-(

And the big difference between the Philippine raids and Hammelburg was intel. The Philippine raids were fairly well planned and had the advantage of a mostly friendly population for intel gathering purposes. Hammelburg was a shot in the dark.

Also, in Farago’s bio of Patton IIRC Patton claimed his only mistake at Hammelburg was not sending a whole Combat Command!

He might have been right. And he probably could have justified it. There were a whole lot more Americans there than just his son-in-law. My memory says it was like 1500 or something.
