I once employed a number of expert code writers, one of whom served in some capacity in Germany in the US Army before he worked for us.

He was not allowed to discuss what he did over there, but he did tell me once when we were talking about deleting files that his unit had strict orders that they must physically destroy hard drives with a sledge hammer when they were no longer to be used.

The subject came up when I mentioned the fact that certain methods of erasing hard drives were described as meeting the strict government standards.

So yes, Gowdy should seize all hard drives and turn them over to some organization that specializes in hard drive recovery.

The FBI, if they can be trusted, the CIA or some top notch commercial outfit.

Some state police have forensic people that can do it.

Once met somebody who said the Air Force base he was stationed at had a burn hole where they melted the hard drives with a thermite charge.

In one place I worked, our Destruction Plan was to throw the hard drives in the microwave and set it for 10 minutes.
