Wilco Cancels Upcoming Show In Indianapolis Because Of Anti-Gay 'Religious Freedom' Law

Chicago-based rock band Wilco has canceled a show planned for May 7 in Indianapolis, Indiana, because of the anti-gay "religious freedom" bill signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence (R) last week.

The band tweeted Monday that they wouldn't perform in the state, saying the Religious Freedom Restoration Act "feels like thinly disguised legal discrimination":

The band is not the first group to speak out against the law, which would allow any individual or corporation to cite its religious beliefs as a defense when sued by a private party. Both the NCAA -- which is holding its men's basketball championship games in Indianapolis -- and the NBA have spoken out in favor of "inclusion" since Pence signed the bill into law. Several college presidents have also raised concerns over the law.

The mayors of both Seattle, and San Francisco, have said they won't allow taxpayer money to be used for city employees' trips to the state. On Monday, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) said he would sign an executive order banning state-funded travel to Indiana because of the law.

Those who oppose the Religious Freedom Restoration Act have argued that it could hurt LGBT patrons by giving business owners who don't want to serve them legal protections to discriminate.

Doesn’t Illinois have its own religious freedom law? Has this Wilco never performed in their own state?

We have a Wilco Farm Supply store in my town - pretty new, like 2 years old. I just bought some gardening gloves in there. It’ll be my last purchase.

Uh.....try clicking to read the article.

Hypocrites.

They expect to enjoy more liberty than a lowly florist. It’s okay for THEM to not participate in something they disagree with, but not okay for others to say no to something they disagree with.

There was a. Boycott over Arizona’s not having MLK Day a now Arizona has an MLK Day.

The Arizona governor Vetoed a Pro Family bill.

Not only do we have the Federal Courts making decisions that violate Traditional Values. But not even Wilco is empowered to make decisions that go against the will of the people.

I had never eaten at Chick-fil-A before, when I heard about the protests, so a month after I decided to go in there to try it out. Well, I usually get the chicken sandwich at these kinds of places, so that’s what I got. Unfortunately it was not good at all! It wasn’t inedible, but it was not good. In any other situation, I would have never ordered another one.

But, in this case, I went back a second time, thinking that perhaps it was a fluke. Well, it was the same thing and I wouldn’t ever order one like that from any other establishment!

HOWEVER, just to give them one more chance ... I ordered a third time ... and these visits were spaced out by a few weeks. The third time it was JUST AS BAD ... so I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. I don’t recommend any one eating there, if “eating” is what they’re concerned about. BUT, if you just want to support their stance, just give them some money as a donation. FORGET ABOUT EATING THERE, as I’ll never go back again!

Again, if you want to support them in what they did, don’t aggravate yourself by eating there ... just drop off a DONATION to them and you’ll feel a lot better than if you had eaten there!

No worry about a disease, just bad food! ... :-) ...

I recommend people just drop off a DONATION and don’t bother with the food! See Post #73 ...

“This produced much in the way of protests and boycotts across the USA ... but it was still signed into law ... :-) ...”

I read the article you posted.
They only reference to a boycott that I saw was from a Dem state senator who called for conventions to boycott.

I didn’t see where any major businesses had supported a boycott.

FWIW I don’t think a boycott of individual consumers would cause a ripple.
However there are at least 9 major corporations either supporting or leaning toward supporting this particular boycott.

Have to see if the NFL and the NCAA join.

It was a firestorm of protests and boycotts ... I don’t know where you were when it was going on, but it DOMINATED the news! ... :-) ...

I posted the article to identify the subject I was talking about. The protests and boycotts were what I saw happening over a period of time.

Can’t the hotels in Indiana sue for discrimination, like the gay couple denied flowers for their wedding?

Isn’t it illegal to discriminate based on religious beliefs?

Bandwagon effect, exploited for PR purposes. Look at how much free advertising this group is getting for cancelling it’s IN shows.

Here’s a list of supporters of the Arizona boycott.
These supporters don’t carry the weight of the Indy boycotters.

It’s mostly city governments and a few conventions like the Urban League.

It looks pretty major to me ... and in my judgement ... what is gonijg on now isn’t a fraction of the protest of what was going on with that. But then again, if you don’t recall it ... it wouldn’t do any good for you to compare the two.
