St. Paul police said Tuesday that their investigation continues after a 24-year-old man being robbed at gunpoint pulled a gun and shot one of his assailants Monday. The would-be victim was not injured, and police Tuesday identified Joseph Barre, 29, as the suspect who'd been shot in the foot. Police were called to the Hmongtown Marketplace at Como and Pennsylvania avenues about 5:30 p.m. Monday with a report of shots fired, and officers recovered several casings, according to a police report. A St. Paul man had been walking outside when two men approached and tried to rob him, police have said. The man, who had a permit to carry, pulled his gun and exchanged gunfire with the suspects, according to police. Lowell Schoenherr was at a park across the street when he heard three shots, turned around and saw a man who hobbled away and got into the back of a car. A car pulled behind it and both drove off quickly, said Schoenherr. He didn't see what led to the incident and he was surprised to hear the shots, he said. Police have said the 24-year-old man got into his own car and pursued the suspects. A second gunfight followed in the 900 block of Thomas Avenue.

Poor judgement.

great advice
the 24-year-old man got into his own car and pursued the suspects
Dumb.
A second gunfight followed in the 900 block of Thomas Avenue
Really stupid!
Yep. That is when it got “complicated”.
Still, if he hunted them down and killed them, If I was on his murder trial jury I’d find him innocent due to “fight of flee” instincts in human beings.
i.e. it’s not the bears fault if, after you attack him with a cattle prod, he rips your head off.
Very complex = The damn intended victim invoked his White privilege and defended himself; shooting the oppressed son-of-Obama who was turning his life around and had just enrolled in community college with an eye toward becoming a brain surgeon.
While I don’t think it should be illegal to follow the suspects after a gunfight, I wouldn’t do it myself unless they had already harmed one of mine....I’m competent with a gun but there’s no sense in tempting fate by asking for a repeat. That said, I will not deter those who wish to give chase...more power to them.
What’s the point of having a CCW if you have to pass all the criteria “tests” before shooting some scum bag trying to rob you?
“Did he have a gun?”
“Was the gun pointed in your direction?”
“Could you have run away”
The next question will likely be, “Was he black?”
Sickening!
a simple rule:
did the perp have- means, proximity, intent.
IF the victim initiated the 2nd shootout, I’d say he’s in trouble. (Given this is MN, not TX)
He was heard by several witnesses to be saying, "Feet up! Don't shoot"
:: fight of flee “
I assume “flight OR flee” reaction.
I get it.
Pardon, but correction:
did the perp have- means, proximity ,opportunity, AND intent.
Poor judgment in following and a lousy shot, but not very 'complex'...
Car 54 ?
Meanwhile we're supposed to think cops fly off the handle in a nanosecond in certain other situations ?
Great list.
I will share it with my HS forensic science class.
Biggest mistake the CCP holder made was not spending enough time on a gun range.
Personally, I think the appropriate result for any type of robbery is immediate, on-site death. I paid with slices of my life for everything I own. You try to take slices of my life, expect to forfeit yours.
It is not illegal to “pursue” your attacker. There was nothing in the article that said the victim initiated the second gunfight.
Agreed. What was the “victim’s” motivation for pursuing he attacker, i wonder?
Did the attacker retain personal property of the victim? To me, that would justify a chase. Hopefully all info will be revealed during the trial.
Don’t aim for the foot.
