The parents of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student whose brutal murder in 1998 helped transform the nation’s perception of gays and lesbians and their struggle for equal rights, brought their campaign for justice to Sacramento on Thursday.

The Shepards received a standing ovation Thursday, and several officers came up to embrace Judy for her efforts, including her work on the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act signed by President Barack Obama on Oct. 28, 2009. The act was named after Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., a 49-year-old African American slain in 1998 by three men, including two known white supremacists, in Jasper, Texas.

This is completely insane. In both cases, the perps received maximum sentences with two of three in the Byrd getting the death penalty—one already sent to hell in 2011 and the other heading there soon—and the third getting life, and the two in the Shepard case getting two consecutive life terms each with one of them avoiding the death penalty because of a deal made by Shepard's parents. What could a hate crime addition do to deter someone that the death penalty or a life sentence cannot?

Well, maybe the hate crimes advocates want cruel and unusual punishment or punish the family of the perp for the perp’s crimes? That’s really the only other explanation I can think of. Too bad the Shephard family is stuck hating despite the perps receiving the exact justice that the Shephards asked for. They can do us a favor and preach against Crystal Meth use and tr TV show Breaking Bad, which makes meth dealing look okay, because their son was a meth addict and other problems which got him into danger and eventually into the bad company which killed him, not to take anything off the killers, but seriously, avoiding risky behavior would save plenty of lives.

Exactly on all counts. Short of torturing these humps, what else can they do to them? I know the hate crimes crowd likes to think that extra penalties are a deterrent, but if the death penalty which three of the five Shepard/Byrd murderers got and life sentences for the other two didn’t stop them from murder, how is anything additional on a sentence that is less than death or life going to deter anything else?

It’s not, but the fact that the criminals get the punishment appropriate for murder tells pretty clearly that the law dealt out what it should, and that is either life without parole in prison or the death penalty. That’s better than back during the turn of the century for blacks, where somebody would murder a black person, get acquitted, and then celebrate the murder pretty much publically and boast to the news media about what they did and how they got away with it. Didn’t happen, if anything, even back in 1998 there was decent proof that legal justice would be applied even if the victim was black or homosexual.

Exactly right. Another manufactured media lie.

And like most things that can be used to club Republicans and conservatives, the agitators and the media paint a completely opposite picture.

They are outright lying, and you have to be deliberately blind at this point? What is worse than the death penalty is an answer I have yet to see. It’s blind hatred, and completely dishonest. It’s pretty %^&% sad that the parents of this troubled young adult lie repeatedly about the details of the case, it’s even more sad that people don’t even read the documentation on the court case, which is generally available. Liars, hypocrites, and bigots, the lot.

Sadly the same old story time and time again. People have all the time in the world to do fantasy football and keep up with the antics of the Kardashians, but nary a second to go further than the crap headlines spewed by the media.

I have zero sympathy for ‘victim” gays anymore. They are violent and intolerant haters, themselves.
