By the definition of magazine fed, a Browning BAR would also qualify as a submachine gun. Somehow that just doesn’t fit. Actually the term, “submachine gun,” was first coined by an army officer and inventor with the last name of Thompson. He defined a submachine gun as an automatic carbine sized weapon, intended to be used by a single person and which fired a pistol cartridge. It was largely an outgrowth of the experience of trench warfare in WWI.
