Healthy but unpopular school lunches cost cafeterias
Allentown Morning Call ^ | April 5, 2015 | By Dan Sheehan

The mechanics of buying school lunch haven't changed much over the years: Pick up a tray, move through the line, eat and get on with the day.

The problem is, students have been pushing a lot of those healthy alternatives into the trash can, or opting out of school lunch altogether in favor of more palatable fare from home. Food costs have risen and meal participation has declined, so many school programs are struggling.

"If I have to write a letter to Mrs. Obama, I will," said Sue Bahnick, who oversees food service in the Northern Lehigh School District.

As Exhibit A she offers a picture of a tray holding orange slices, broccoli and a container of low-fat milk. Hearty? No. Eligible? Yes, because the meal includes three of a mandatory five available offerings, including a fruit or vegetable.

The move to 100 percent whole grains has been another sticking point. Bahnick said whole grain items cost more and are less popular, with students turning their noses up at whole grain pasta, for instance.

The government has given some leeway to that rule — districts can apply for a waiver that would let them temporarily return to the old whole grain standard of 50 percent this year and next.

Bahnick pointed out the American Dietetic Association recommends whole grains constitute 50 percent of grain consumption. "If 50 percent is good enough for Americans, how come it isn't good enough for students?" she said.

So what, just get behind the School Lunch program already, now call your congress critters and tell them how important this is and DEMAND that they immediately pass legislation mandating the SAME HEALTHY MEALS FOR all federal facilities, INCLUDING THE WHITE HUT and CONGRESS.

It amazes me that a local school district should think they have to clear anything with an unelected First Lady. Or for that matter, anyone at all in Washington DC.

Has Washington solved all of the problems it is responsible for, and now has to go out looking for things to solve at the local level? Do we need a federal commissar checking to see if you've mowed your grass? A federal czar to see if you choose paper or plastic?

Evidently Democrats aspire to be King of Everything. And they very nearly are.

Whole grain bread is much, much better.

Most other whole grain products, not so much.

Which they should have been doing all along.

Actually some of that brown spaghetti isn’t too bad with normal sauce and a little meat on it.

Our 14 year old granddaughter really likes the whole grains bread we have but not the yuckie brown bread that you get in restaurants and I’m assuming at school. She just skips lunch all together and rarely eats breakfast. Whole grain pasta is disgusting. Pasta, like ice cream, is meant to be junkie.

Two hundred thirty calories? The classrooms will have the students fading out in the middle of the afternoon! Forget about an energetic PhysEd program - the kids will be slogging along.

Another Liberal success story that is actually a disaster.

It was such a good idea — on paper.
