Ron Paul supporters bolt Rand Paul camp -Support Ted Cruz
Politco ^ | 3/26/2015 | Ben Schrenkinger

As he pulls together his expected presidential campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, Sen. Rand Paul is confronted by defections from an unexpected quarter: the die-hard idealists whose energy powered his father’s campaigns. That network of committed supporters was expected to convey to Paul, the natural successor to Ron Paul’s libertarian movement, providing him with a plug-and-play ground organization in the make-or-break early voting states. But instead of embracing the Kentucky senator, many of those grass-roots activists are turning their backs on him, disillusioned by the younger Paul’s concessions to mainstream politics. Story Continued Below One of the most prominent defectors is Drew Ivers, chairman of Ron Paul’s 2012 Iowa campaign, who says he will not endorse Rand Paul for president. On Tuesday, three members of Iowa’s Ron Paul-aligned Liberty movement — state Sen. Jason Shultz and former Iowa Republican Party central committee members Chad Steenhoek and Joel Kurtinitis — announced the same, adding that they will support Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Ivers said he does not plan to endorse any candidate. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, center, accompanied by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., left, and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, right, express their frustration after the Senate passed a bill to fund the government, but stripped it of the defund 'Obamacare' language as crafted by House Republicans, Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, on Capitol Hill in Washington. The Republican-controlled House and the Democrat-controlled Senate are at an impasse as Congress continues to struggle over how to prevent a possible shutdown of the federal government when it runs out of money in three days. I contributed to Ted Cruz’s campaign. Not a lot, I admit, but I’m among the millions of folks who are just totally fed up with what they’ve seen and heard for the past 7 years...and even before.

Ted Cruz talks about the things that matter. He doesn’t whine, become vicious or make things up...he just reminds us of how good we’ve been and how we MIGHT have another chance at goodness in America.

I support Ted Cruz...MY senator!

Mike Lee is another rock star and would be a wonderful VP for President Cruz. :)

If the choice is between Rand and Cruz... we win and big.

I suspect Mike will be brought in once Cruz is there...maybe VP but will see. I don’t think we need to be concerned with who Cruz picks after he’s in office....I believe by how is campaign has gone so far they likely already know how that’s going to go.

Cruz and Rand differ very much on foreign policy.....and Rand didn’t get his start very well IMO...He got testy with the media and keeps trying to school those interviewing him which is going to give him a lot of trouble if he keeps up as that.

However I’m not convinced he’s in this to win either and his purpose with those who come out ahead is known to those who matter.

So far Cruz has been the more effective campaigner. He got more bang from his announcement by going first and skipping the tedious exploratory committee phase. He’s done great on fund raising, including having some pretty significant millionaire donors set up a PAC for him that already has $31 million, and he has not made any verbal mis-steps.

Paul’s start has been considerably more rocky. His speech included the awkward phrase about getting rid of laws that disproportionately impact blacks, and several of his interviews wiht Conservative media have been somewhat combative.

If Rand can keep up his irritation level with the media it will be interesting, and quite helpful to Cruz, but I don’t think it positions him well in the public eye to win the nomination.

Mike would be an asset to any administration...and he is a great leader now. He has all the right credentials!

I would have voted for him for president...if Ted hadn’t run. :)

Rand has already done a better job on the life issue than the entire republican field in 2012.

He would have demolished Stephanopolous and Crowley during the debates... We need that.
