Tufts University announced Tuesday it will proactively and openly recruit undocumented students and offer financial aid to eligible students, a clear declaration that immigration advocates hailed as a significant victory.
Under the new policy, the private university will consider all students in the country illegally as regular domestic applicants, eligible for the same university aid as US citizens. Because undocumented students are ineligible for federal financial aid, the university will make up the difference out of its own funds for students who cannot afford to pay their own way.
The Tufts policy applies to all undocumented students, not just those who qualify under DACA.
We told the administration that wasnt enough, said Zobella Vinik, a Tufts senior and president of United for Immigrant Justice, one of the student groups that lobbied for the change.
Vinik and other students said they hope the new policy will help attract undocumented students who would otherwise assume they would not be able to afford such an expensive school without federal aid.
ritics of illegal immigration said the change was misguided and would wind up depriving some US students of admission and financial aid opportunities.
It is a mystery to me why an institution like Tufts would want to encourage students who are in the country illegally to attend, said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C., research group. It allows students who are here illegally to access programs that are scarce, and should be used to benefit legally present students. Its a strange message to be sending.

This is a case of the inmates running the asylum.
I am ashamed and embarrassed to be an alumna of this once great University.
I wonder if Fletcher Sch of Law & Dipl is exempt?
Or is Tufts becoming a feeder undergrad sch ?
scary to say the least
and btw, have you heard about UPS and their work-study program
in Kentucky? you work for them whatever shift , keep the GPA
above a C and they pay full tuition.
It was also published today Starbucks has climbed on board
this type of program in imitation with their selected
university programs.

What does an illegal presence in the country have to do with ‘immigration?’
By their standard, robbing a bank is the equivalent working in the financial sector.
Good reason for students to protest.
Deport this clown
Considering how many Americans, and Black Americans can’t afford to go or just plain have trouble getting into college and these a-holes are going to actively seek out and assist people who have no right to even be in the country? I want to see a law passed that pulls all Federal funding from institutions that do this, let’s see their attitude when there are no funds to pay their outrageous salaries.
So regular tuition based students will foot the bill for the illegals. My, my, what a grand idea.
Tufts will just eat the additional cost. LIE MUCH?
Save your donations......
I wonder what the alumni/alumnae think about this? Will there be some pushback?
