12,000 non-disabled adults were in Maines SNAP program before Jan. 1 - a number that dropped to 2,680 by the end of March.
More than 9,000 Maine residents have been removed from the state's food stamp program since Republican Gov. Paul LePage's administration began enforcing work and volunteer requirements.
The new rules prevent adults who are not disabled and do not have dependents from receiving food stamps for more than three months - unless they work at least 20 hours a week, participate in a work-training program or meet volunteering requirements. DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew said the goal of the requirements is to encourage people to find work.

Go nationwide with that!
Bad news indeed for the slacker legions.
Sounds right to me
Every state should enforce that.
Wha? I gots to work for duh free stuffs?
I’ll bet Olympia Snowe is having a hissy fit over this.
Gov. LePage, slowly righting the ship!
If you don’t want to help yourself enough to even work 20 hours a week, I have no sympathy for you.
This is the correct approach! All of those republicans trying to pass feel good laws restricting what someone on food stamps can buy does nothing to solve the problem. This right here should be done nationwide to not only food stamps but other welfare payments. We need a fundamental change on how we pass out government entitlements
When we get the White House start the House and Senate on working this rule nation wide.
bump
Get down to the temp service and sign up, you can make $50 a day!
“but I’ll lose my benefits”
ugh
2 Thessalonians 3:10, King James Version (KJV)
“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
If you dont want to help yourself enough to even work 20 hours a week, I have no sympathy for you.

And all they had to do was volunteer 24 hours per month. If they’re not willing to do that, they don’t need it bad enough for the taxpayers to have to fund these couch potatoes.
Bet those Somalian & Muslim immigrants don’t have such requirements and can stay on them?
I also believe if you receive a government check, other than a tax refund, you should not be allowed to vote.
Only problem is there are more than 250,000 food stamp recipients in Maine. It is a step in the right direction, but it is only a reduction of ~1%— meaningless in terms of budget/reigning in government spending.
So how is that as a percentage of the total food-stamp recipients?
