I was born and raised in Walton County Florida.

Running on those beaches is interesting. I have done it, in fact chasing down a friend but you sure don’t go fast.

Those physical requirements don’t seem to be particularly demanding.

Nope. I am 65YO and I can do all but the run. The only reason I can no longer run the 5 miles is that I blew out my knee when I was 62.

No, 6 has been the standard for at least 25 years.

Around 1962, President Kennedy was encouraging American kids to get into better shape. One idea was a 50 mile hike. Another was physical fitness tests. Those were good ideas even if they came from JFK.

Schools tested us on maybe 6 or 7 fitness events. I scored 100the percentile on every one except the 40 yard dash. Oddly that was by far my strongest event. I actually think the coach’s timing was off. I still scored 95th percentile on it.

Now I could not pass any of the Army standards. I am 68, overweight and in poor health. In my day tho I was good.

huh...I recollect that Presidential Fitness thing called for 25 miles under 8 hours. Our HS JrRotc company did it twice under seven. Piece of cake.

The 50 mile hike deal was not a competition. It was just an idea which became popular for a while. Just hike 50 miles, however long it took. It was suggested by Kennedy tho.

I can’t recall all of the events in the school competitive tests. One was a 600 yard run/walk and that is exactly what they called it. Never heard of a 600 yard event before or after.

I was a Marine. We had one of our Scout Snipers go to Ranger School. He was a lean guy. He came back a lot leaner.

In initial training, I ran two miles in 15 minutes, 35 seconds at 31 years of age (Ft. Leonard Wood). Then, we did five-mile runs (not timed but at a full run). Then later and elsewhere, a ten-kilometer run in full gear. Now, I’m getting old. ;-)

Make that a five-mile run. Don’t remember more than one in PT uniform. 195 lbs. and tall. Averaged about 4 mph on the 18-mile march in full gear (55 lb. load) and carried a buddy part of the way. He had a stress fracture. Chow was good and huge for us, but it wasn’t enough for some.

They are not; they are the bare minimum and you will find that most students max their PT tests at their unit before reporting in.

My guess is that there will be ‘concessions’ during the mountain and Eglin AFB phase. What bothers me most is what precisely is this supposed to accomplish?

The swim can be tough for marginal swimmers; no matter how tough they are.

President Kennedy was a deeply flawed individual but he loved the country and supported the military.

"it’s crazy how long it takes to do the APFT for everyone"

Nah. it's a vital part of training and conditioning. Even out Commanding Generals do the PFT with us.

Warfare takes time too.
